***OKIES in the BYC III ***

A few pics from the flock today

Jackie O, the only actual survivor of the attack (the others were fenced separately that is why they were safe) but she was out and the only one w/ sense to get high and stay high.

Main man, the new head roo"let" he is birchen and carries the Sc gene

Reba and the mama's boy (main man)

Both shots of Shakespear "the barred) this is my second roo"let" or back up, he does not carry Sc but has only a tiny couple of feathers for a bow tie.

White butt, the only NN female from this hatch
I think that White Butt is very cool looking! How can you tell that someone is carrying the sc gene? (and what is that exactly - I think I've forgotten)

I got this trio at the auction for free. They had a row of cages lined up, and I saw one of the handlers shaking one cage a little, then he took his foot and shoved it out of line. I went over to look and these beautiful babies were huddled up, not active. The handler said he was the owner, that he and his wife were getting divorced and he'd had to move out, so his wife let all the chickens go without food and water for four days, and he wasn't going to sell birds if he couldn't guarantee they would live through the night.

Of course my heart broke a little right then. He saw the look on my face, and told me I could have them if I wanted to try to get them better. I think Ksane infected me with her sickness because they're mine now and I didn't even WANT Cochins! I don't even know what kind they are.

They have bad scaley legs, so I put a drop of Frontline on each and treated with Pam. One of the girls is limping pretty bad. But they're up and around today, eating and drinking like chickens six times their size. And they're sweet and let me pick them up and cuddle them without too much fuss, so I could look them over.

I have a silver bantam frizzle silkie that needs a home. He isn't show quality but I think he is pretty. He is an attentive rooster and I hate to give him away but he and his brother have started fighting. I just don't have enough hens for both of them. I have him caged right now, which of course is making him very upset. If you're interested or know someone who is please message me. This just breaks my heart, I want to find a good home for him.

One question about incubating. Should the temp read 99.5 on top of the eggs or on top of the egg turner? It's a still air but it has a fan... so I guess technically it's a forced air.

Someone asked if I let the eggs rest for 24-48 hrs... Yes and no. They sat on a table at the post office for 24 hrs until my husband picked them up. Then they sat for about 8 hrs here at the house until I made sure the incubator was all set.
Should I rotate them inside the incubator since there are hot and cold spots? How often if so?

I think I want a hen for my layer group - they are hearty birds, (and adorable chicks). Jack shares your opinion. He even thinks my Showgirl is ugly.
So does Doc, thank goodness!

I think of all the chickens in chickendom, they are a "litmus" chicken, either you love or hate them, no middle ground.
Very true!!!

I prefer the Black-skinned ones.
The weird thing is I like the showgirls with the black skin but "red necked" chickens freak me out.. Maybe I am just a bit prejudgest...

I think they are buff columbian Cochin bantams.
No I think looking at the comb they are buff Brahmas but looking at the leg feathering maybe cochin/brahma mix. very nice coloring. Sad situation they had to be in. I never understand how people can take their issues out on animals who cannot defend themselves....

 Sure, I'll be the scapegoat lol Love the feathered legs and Pea combs, my favorite. The one in the 1st picture is a boy, did you know? Not that it matters. Sometimes we don't realize we want something til we see how bad it needs us. And it sure sounds like they needed you really bad. The Frontline was a good call!

I'm way NW of MJ, Kass & Robin in Guthrie, but Kass has 1 1/2 cockerels :)gig 1 has 1 testicle) that I'm getting from her. They don't wanna be nuggets.....!!
Robin, could you take MJ's Dun colored guinea to go in with your flock? I had been going to take him thinking none of my auction keets were going to live. But amazingly enough after hand-feeding him, the last of the 6 is going to live and is doing much better...so if someone else can take MJ's gorgeous Guinea that'd help us both out. Anyway, if MJ can make it to Kass in Henryetta she could drop off O'Brien (& hopefully the Guinea) since there's no auction again this week....and bring back Kass's 2 boys and I could meet her by her place on the way back. Or-if she can't make it I could pick bird(s) up at MJ's and drive onto Henryetta and make the exchange. My schedule is pretty open except for today.
Robin, here's the Guinea. And another cute shot from facebook.
