***OKIES in the BYC III ***

If you're in Tulsa you can take your truck, if you have one, out to the green waste facility and they'll load it full of woodchips.

@Ksane

They are still beautiful! (darn it, my pic of the finished product won't upload). They will look so handsome in the roasting pan and crockpot. I wasn't attached to the cockerels. They were kept separate from the girls. I didn't mess with or handle them, just made sure they had food/water/shelter.

@NanaKat I don't recall any smell when scalding them. The only time I recall any noticeable odor was during evisceration.

You may be able to slip the chick under the hen when hers have finished hatching. Slip the chick up under her wing. Make sure they are in a pen separate from the other hens and provide chick feed and a water system. The hen will cover the newly hatched and the older chick can slip out for food and water and return to mom. It will quickly adjust to a mother.
The Barred Rock chick died and the remaining chick was so lonely. I held him and he even trilled to me. :) ah, happiness.... But, a pet snuggle buddy chick will work out. I determined that the broodies eggs were no good. Traded them out for the chick. Kicked everyone else out of the coop for a few hours. And, after determining that the broody was talking to the chick and the chick was 'listening'. Decided it was a done deal. They continued to bond in the coop for the rest of the day and tonight, I snuck them into a snug kennel and into their own pen. So, happy chick and happy hen. A happy ending!

I used to use straw but it can get caught in their crops so I just got prarie grass @ 8.00/bale. One bale goes a long way and is great for nests.
Financially it makes sense, given the price of 'bales' of shavings....but I cant stand the thought of using good 'food' for chicken bedding!

Hmmmmm. Another challenge...Silver Blue Wyandotte.

Lemon blue first :)-

Oh....forgot to answer your other questions....we didn't weigh them. Coral did Monster. It was dark and getting cooler when we started packing up that I just took them inside to rinse before bagging them.
