***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Maybe I'm seeing a neck stretched differently than it is... is she stretching her own neck or was she hanging by the neck?

Some forcasters are talking about really low temps. How low is dangerous for our birds? mine are out of the wind but 9* sounds terrible. Most of mine are Cochins and they stay pretty warm and my Showgirl is in with them but I am tempted to bring her in.
Yikes, 9!?
Mine are kept in at night in a 14x14 tough shed. I have one heat lamp in there. Keeps it (usually) just above freezing. I know that many of my birds snuggle together. Do your cochins do that for the showgirl?

Contamination is what I've been thinking about too. I've been trying to clean and change everything, even burning bedding; Woke up to another young drake, dead.

I didn't get a chance to call the ag dept today. Had to go get blood work and hubby had open heart surgery 3 weeks ago and was feeling pretty bad so I took him to the emergency room. His blood pressure was too low with all the meds they put him on. Otherwise he's fine. It's been a busy day. Even the feed store was swamped.
I don't know any of the people on here, but I'm glad and grateful the surgery turned out fine for your friend. I'll pray for a quick and healthy recovery for her.
neighbor Kassandra, you take amazing pictures. Maybe someday I can get u to take some pics of my kids. After I find out what's going on that is. I think I'm ready for the cold. I put new insulation in the coops. and lots of fluffy bedding. I think I'm about ready to collapse now. I'll let everyone know the minute I get the results on the ducks.

HELP!!! Went out to feed and, found one of my hens with her neck stretched way out hanging down. what do I do????
Bring her in, isolate, how is her breathing and poops? is she eating?

i sure would MJ, but then i am paranoid about mine- i have all silkies and seramas in spare cages in spare rooms and studio and kitchen- gonna be very noisy the next few days- have art and knitting to do- doublewrapped the porch coops- heat lamps for those, looks like a long haul on this and then travis says another next weekend-
got extra feed for the animals and us, may run out of milk, but we'll survive..:)

Hope you find out the answer. Have you thought about doing a necropsy on the newly dead ones, while your waiting on their results? I know you can't do the lab work and all that, but I generally give the insides and organs a good once over on an unexplained death. I have been able to spot some things, like one that had a bad or mushy heart, and a couple w/ tumors and stuff like that.

Sorry your husband wasn't feeling well today, hope for an uneventful further recovery.

I love photography, especially nature.

I am NEVER ready for the cold, and even worse is having to work in it.

Nope won't trade this lifestyle for any other either. Love being in the country.

Looks like the weather pattern is changing somewhat and Southeastern OKIES will get most of the ice. Hope you are all safe and have water drawn up and extra batteries if you are on well service. We have the Bantams to move this afternoon. Everything else is ready.

Roger's SIL is having surgery this morning for blockages in her leg and a stint on a vein out of her stomach...serious stuff. She has several stints in her heart and they are being cautious. Please keep Joan in your prayers today. We are heading to the heart hospital soon to be with the family.
.
I second that! Through all the heartache, inconvenience and hard work, I love living in the country and would not trade this life for anything....

Thank you for the prayers for Joan. She came thru surgery beautifully. The doctor only cleared the clot from left leg and checked to make sure the stint in her abdomen was clear. He decided to wait on the bypass on the blockage in her right leg until after the first of the year. She has some channel vessels that have formed in the area of the clot and he knew he would have to do another incision instead of using the wire. Her left leg was the worst and needed attention first. Love her doctor...great bed side manner and very patient with all the questions and concerns the family had. Joan comes home in the morning before the snow starts.

Free ranging chickens are opportunistic feeders! I cleaned out the lovebird cage and set the seed from the bottom of the tray aside for the wild birds. Guess who dumped it and started slinging seed all over the carport drive?

I'm working on two baby quilts while the weather is rowdy. Hope everyone has an inside project too. Looks like we may be holed up for a while.
Glad she came through well. Hope her leg gets better. That is some rough stuff to go through.

I have found that showgirls are very okay with crawling under a warm cochin butt, and cochins don't seem to mind it when they do.

Her neck is just hanging
Is her breathing labored? How is her coloring? Put her in a safe place so she can lay down.

My dogs have ESP. I have been in and out of the refrigerator all day, doing some cooking and putzing. Anyway a few minutes ago I looked in the fridge to put something up, I did NOTHING different then I had been doing all day long, but my eye caught the bowl I had some meat drippings I was planning on mixing w/ the dogs food for a special treat, now mind you I only thought about it, I did not reach for it or take any actions at all and all of a sudden the dogs went crazy doing their "treat dance" complete w/ singing!!!
