***OKIES in the BYC III ***

These are pics of my chicken coops, quail coop and rabbit hutch today. I cannot even get to my NN coop to check on my birds. Still raining and ice is still accumulating on everything. Luckily I fed enough feed for a few days and locked my chickens up last night, just worried about their water being froze. Will work to get to the water tomorrow.

Here in Warner almost all the ice has melted off the trees.

I do not know what Henryetta is like, I know earlier the electric was out, but haven't heard from my husband in a while.

Wow, hope all of your chickens and animals are ok. It's bad here in Broken Arrow, but I think you got more rain and ice then I did.

We are without power this morning after fluctuations all day yesterday. ground pans of wafter havehave not frozen..go figure. incubator is covered with towels until the elect comes back on....hope for the best. looks like all the pens are wet but the birds are dry on their straw and leaves. made fudge and Aunt Bill's candy yesterday and worked on another quilt. was able to make coffee before the power went off...yum. stay warm and safe.

Rinda....how far along was you hatch in the bator?

WOOHOO!! It let me log in! only way i could do it all day was with taptalk....

Met Rinda! AWESOME LADY!! she graciously kept this boy for me- and e rode on a blanket on my lap home, now in a cage for quarantine, i think he knows what a camera is, as soon as i brought it out he posed!!

he actually has a quieter crow than my silkies

Robyn he is BEAUTIFUL! Congrats! and yes Rinda is an amazing person to meet. I met her once. Very nice and very knowledgeable. I hope to buy some pullets from her in the spring.

here are my two pretty girls i got from MJ

Those are beautiful. What type are they?

So this is kinda nuts. Mom live in midtown tulsa. She had her second hawk attack today! She was able to scare it away but not before 4 of her 5 birds scattered! She located them finally by just walking aroung her yard very quietly. One was clucking softly and gave away the hiding place.

Cathie I live in Tulsa. Hawks are a major predator here. I know several chicken peeps in Tulsa, and all of us have our coops and run fully enclosed with bird or chick netting over the top. I actually enjoy having the hawks and owls here, because they help to keep the rats and snakes at bay. I just make sure my chickens are safe.

Speaking of rats.. we have a rat or something living under our shed. I hate using poison, but will probably have to toss some under the shed because we can't find where it's burrow is. I just pray that it dies under the shed and no hawk or owl gets it.

I finally called the poultry division at the ag dept in okc. I got to talk to Dr. Herrin . What a nice and pleasant man. I've talked to him before and he is always so helpful. He takes time to answer your questions and seems genuinely concerned for your feeling on our poultry.

He said the samples have come back and the one that had the necropsy died of a pasteurellosis infection. I thought they would have shown symptoms, but maybe I missed them. I did look up several sites, trying to find out more about it, and one site said sometimes it does't show any symptoms.

The vet said, botulism still couldn't be ruled out as a secondary. Anyway I am so paranoid and worry so much about my animals(kids, grandkids, husband, etc,) Just a worry wort.

Dr. Herrin said it is safe to butcher and sell them. Just look for signs of illness. I check everything and count heads. Now, I get them up to see how they are walking and try to pay particular attention to make sure they all have an appetite.
He e-mailed the lab report so I thought I'd post it, but it is 4 pages.

Lonnyandrinda------Yes, the eggs are fertile. Hubby used to raise chickens years ago and showed me how to tell.Thank you for the info. I do want to see what I get, but if they don't hatch I won't go bonkers. I've had really good luck on my broodies hatching eggs. Except for one hen, long story/ Poor thing she finally hatched two and after I let them out of the broodhouse at 8 weeks, she disappeared. The kids are doing great though.

Kassaundra----------They have been laying for over a month. I really can't remember when they started, but it's been awhile.

After seeing all the pictures of everyone's gorgeous birds, I got all excited last night and got the fever again, so I started looking up different breeds. The biggest reason, I usually get them from hatcheries is because I know they are healthy and don't come with any disease. I know they cull any sick bird to make sure they never have any carriers. Auctions, scare me. I've only been to one, but there were some sick looking birds. And one guy bought most of them and then stuffed them in several cages, with the roosters fighting and drawing blood. It made me sick to my stomach. So, I've never been to another one. There were some beautiful birds, but not knowing the background makes me nervous, even after quarantining them, you still don't know if they are carriers of one of the two respiratory diseases that they can carry. Am I too crazy. I don't mean to be. I don't sell any of my chickens, only eggs, but I'd hate to think a wild bird caught, something from one of my birds and then carried it to someone elses flock. That's why I'm so upset about the ducks. I have no idea where they caught this , if letting someone come in my yard and buying ducks, carrying it. I'm going to have to do something different when selling the ducks. I know people like to pick out their own, so I'll figure something out. Dr. Herrin assured me that it's ok to butcher and sell what I have, that it's like strep, they won't be carriers. Anyway, I'm praying and hope I get an answer about selling anymore. I'm such a wimp I can't kill my own. I do pluck and dress them out though. Sorry I've been so windy. Just needed to talk. Sometimes I get pretty lonely.

Will post the lab report a little later.

Hort.... I am sorry you are having such bad issues with your birds, :( It is so hard when you can not pin point what it issue is, and you try everything you know to do and it still continues. It will get better. HUGS.

I also got the fever after seeing the pretty birds everyone was posting. I wanted to go to the auction Fri night, but didn't make it and I was so dissapointed. I agree auctions make me nervous too. But it is a good way to at least learn about different breeds and get to know regular breeders.

You are not crazy. Just careful. And that is a very good thing. :)

Chat away anytime. I enjoy reading your posts and others.
Met Cheryl (SonRisesilkies) in Norman this morning to pick up 7 Cochins she had purchased as chicks from my flock back in the spring and early summer. She was unable to keep them so I bought them back and the five pullets and two cockerels are settled in a pen and coop for quarantine. A few of the pullets are out of Delilah and Big Blue...some very pretty eye candy. The rest are out of Big Blue and the Iowa hens.

Roger found Alice, one of my Australorp hens, in the sunny window of the hen house looking like she was asleep. She had died. Alice was the hen who would steal chicks from their mothers when the mother began to wean the chicks. She never went broodie on eggs, but raised many a stolen chick. Alice was five years old and was a hatchery purchase.

Hope everyone is okay thru this ice storm. we drew up water just in case the electricity goes off with ice damage. when you live with a well, the well won't pump when the power is off. I 'm hoping for hot coffee in the morning.

Loved all the pictures everyone posted. Hope those of you who are sick recover quickly.

Nana so sorry for your loss. I love Australorps. They are so beautiful.
