***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Thanks!

I ended up using the power cord that went out in that direction to give the main coop their heat lamp. So, relocated the show silkies to a kennel with fresh shavings to a 'kennel' stack by the front door (very sheltered). The lower kennel has the other silkies (wet pen from a few days ago) and that kennel is on top of a cat warmer bed. Then the top kennel has my navy Severe Foul Weather bridgecoat draped on top of it. It is the ugliest coat you have ever seen, but I've found nothing else that can beat it. There were two bunches of 'purry' silkies. Though, I wish that they would complain when they are cold - like chicks do - it would be so much easier to make these decisions if you they told you that they were cold!
Haha YES!

i dont know that i'd want silkies or seramas out in the temps we are having, although i have heard of people have a solid coop, and lots of shavings and they do ok, i do have a heater in the main coop so it stays above freezing

i gave mine hot oatmeal tonite.

My Showgirl's heat lamp is 2 Cochins and 4 young EEs. I worried one night about her and went to check at 11:30. She looked toasty and her bare neck is a furnace. The EEs are her hatchlings do they snuggle up to her.

Something killed 5 of my hens in one of the 50x50 yards and a rooster is missing in the big rooster yard next to it. It took their heads off of all of them and gutted a couple. Ate the entire inside of 1 of them. Does that sound like a coon or skunk? They were inside their 4x8 coops but the coop doors weren't shut. Those yards are farthest-about 100' from the house. We're going to lock em` up and set the traps tonight. It got 2 of my Orps, both Frizzle Cochins and my Black Star. The rooster who's missing was my last Brown Red Bantam Ameraucana, something got his twin brother last summer.
All the birds I've gotten this year are in roofed pens.
I am so sorry to hear that.

It is frustrating to get predators and not know how they got in. I hope you catch that varmint!

Dachshund are the best for rats, moles, voles and snakes. My two are the best for that and what they don't kill the plethora of cats I have take care of the rest.

I would use a killing cone, that way they will not struggle as much and the blood drains out with less handling... What I was thinking is maybe we need to have a meat bird swap so we don't have to kill the birds we raise.. Just a thought!!!

Don't give up I have seen eggs hatch from worse situations then that...

Coons!! I HATE THOSE STINKING VERMIN!!!

A gun is essential part of raising chickens... That is my opinion of it..

It is so hard to lose a fur and/or feathered friend.. It is a pain that does not go away easily... There are some that can never be replaced..

When we dispatch a bird here we use a killing cone. It is the best and easiest way for us that we have found. We make sure to have a very sharp knife to not make the bird suffer. However we need to find a better place to do it. Last time we did a hen, I thought my neighbor was not home and would not be bothered by the sight. Turns out she was, and let me know about it. (Oops sorry neighbor).

I really want to set up a portable butchering station, with a sink and cutting table and small frame to hang the bird from to pluck it. Maybe set it up behind the shed and then bring it into the garage to store when not in use.

I agree a gun is essential, but here in the city I can't shoot everything. I need to invest in a pellet gun at least. In back of our house is a city park/green belt with a creek. It is beautiful and so nice to not have neighbors right behind us. But we also get the wildlife that hides along the creek banks.

Plus the stray dogs and the dogs whos owners don't keep them on the leash.

Some one mentioned doing a meat bird swap. That would be great! We do the egg hatching through the OSU extention office each year and last year we got about 14 meat birds. A friend came over to help butcher and we sent half home with him.

NotSuperWoman, I wouldn't charge you for her. She was a bonus to go with the two sisters of hers that I bought. Just give her a good home.

Thanks @Kyzmette she will get a good home here. :) I can come get her Saturday. (Late Christmas present!) Thanks!!!

We are not doing much here today. I have 3 gifts to finish by tonight, so it is movie and couch day for us today. Plus I am brainstorming about re arranging the garden and getting dead tree branches down. I want to re paint the chicken coop red with white trim this spring. :)

@NotSuperWoman you don't have to come to Skiatook. Since I come into Tulsa on a regular basis, I'll bring her into town one of these days soon.

KSANE Sorry to hear about your losses. Such a dreadful way to find them.

Half inch thick ice on all the water tubs...and it froze back in 10 minutes! Delaware Bantams are laying up a storm of eggs...six for six yesterday and three already this morning. Took pictures of the ice...will post when our internet is back up. working on another baby quilt ...down to the handwork . Stay warm and dry.

You can get hatching eggs at the OSU extension? wow is that all of them or just yours? that would be great if ours did that!!!

I wish I took some photos of the ice on the trees and gates but after taking care of all the critters and chasing the neighbor's dog away I had enough of being outside. I'll try to get some nighttime shots before it all melts tomorrow.

I have a lot of chicken pictures on my new camera that I need to post.

I was thinking about dusting off the old tripod tonight and getting a few night shots tonight too,
