***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Anyone in central Oklahoma (OKC, Edmond, or close by) raise Silkies?

I want to start with one in my new flock, but someone told me they are "hard" to take care of as they are dirty. I am TOTALLY new to chickens (getting my first on the 14th).

I personally don't think silkies are hard, mine act pretty simple but then again everyone's flock is built different I guess. I raise silkies and I'm in that area but not sure if I would have any to sell right now :/

i don't know why they would say that as far as i know they are not hard to take care of or "dirty" I only have 2 and they are no different than my other birds cleanliness wise.

Not sure why silkies would be considered hard?? I have silkies.... many many.... fragile? Well, just be aware of head injuries, i am sure Betsy will chime in, she's very knowledgable and all of mine have come from her lines- dirty- well, if they are outside in the mud, yeah, they'll get dirty, like any feather footed breed would, i give mine supplimental vitamins a few times a week, and other than that i don't see alot of difference with them- wouldn't want to free range them- as they are easy pickens for hawks- ok, thats my take on 'a difficult' breed...LOL!

i will seriously miss Matt... i think he has melted alot of the earlier drs in his version-

had a new showgirl chick hatch for the last baby of the year...

OMG!!!! I love her!!! So stinking cute!!! I might have to break down and get me one of those again...

These are the 4 color versions. I don't know what I am more pleased by that I got them done on time or that I was able to 100% use my stash fabric.

Very lovely quilt blocks and congrats on using the stash fabric... I am a fabric hoarder of the worst kind and Doc took me to a fabulous quilting store outside of Antlers last week... They even had chicken fabric...

There's 3 I'd kept here and they're all social like that. I honestly didn't expect to like "plain old red cockerels" so well but I do. However I've been known to get attached to a rock

I kept 2 because they were way too tiny to go in with the other bunch and those 2 have outgrown everyone here. I just thought it was odd they don't have any combs or wattles to speak of and because of their color i do know they're males.
This Standard Cornish rooster is who cracks me up. I've only had him 3 wks and as soon as he sees me he starts calling to his girls to eat. They can already have food in their feed tub but as soon as he sees me he goes to clucking. I may only have 1/2 a jelly sandwich in my hand but he knows I'm going to give it to him if he acts really excited to see me. So much personality.

I understand that, quite a few of my chickens and almost all of my turkeys follow me around when I am outside. I have quite a large bunch of feathered groupies!!!!

my ducks had quite a pile of eggs going- 59 eggs! under the porch. Anyone need duck eggs? can be sure whether they are hatchable

There is an auction in Newcastle Saturday @ 5pm and they may have silkies... No guarantees they will but since there has not been an auction there in almost two months there are sure to be some birds you might like...

i am thinking the GP crossed with a retriever might be the best mix, sounds like she stays home more
