***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Amen.

I put out a layer of straw on top of the snow for my birds yesterday because they wouldn't even come out of their house. They all just piled in the door looking at the snow. One barred rock walked out and then ran back in and complained for about twenty minutes.

:gig Some of them are sure good at complaining.

Yep. One of our barred rocks follows me around the yard and I swear she's worse than any teenage girl.

Anyone here know any natural cough remedies?

I have a horrid cough and I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions for remedies. Does the black pepper and honey method work?

my grandma always gave us honey and onion simmered till the onions are clear, really helps with a sore throat too

do you have anay herbal teas?

on the guinea, all of the others are lighter, this one is so pretty, from a distance he looks black

He looks like a Royal Purple to me, Robin. I found one that color in amongst my layers a year or 2 ago and posted his picture. Christina from this board said he was a Royal Purple, he looked identical to yours. So dang pretty.

ok guys, your funny pic of the day

got 3 eggs today, then forgot i put them in my pocket...ewww....
I LOVE that face!!! Such a cutie!!!!! My oldest is CRAZY for silkies! I don't blame her. They are so darn CUTE!

Shelbydog and I aren't the kinds of friends who share a cup of coffee at Chicken Anonymous... we're the friends who wake up in Mexican jails with feathers in our bras and farmers pressing charges.
LOL!!!

Y'all are having me in stitches!
Babies hatching today and babysitting tonight. Moved eggs and candled sets. Put 51 new eggs in today.
Weather is a little breezy and on the cold side but not like the past few days. Hope to make it to Edmond before any drizzle begins freezing.
Hubby is going to lock up the birds for me tonight so I've filled all feeders and fluffed hay in the coops.
So what's hatching and whats in the bator now? Sorry... I get curious...

Can I be added to this group? I live in Broken Arrow. I'm new to byc so still figuring out how this all works.
Welcome!!!

My computer broke so I'm on my phone exclusively. I haven't been able to keep up as I would like. Here are pictures of my eggs. I only have two hens and we get two eggs most days so I think they're doing great! The blue egg is the prettiest sky blue color. I'm so glad hubby picked an Easter egger.
Good to hear from you again! My goodness that egg is such a pretty blue! My husband just doesn't get why I want a variety of egg colors.

Ah, well I finally feel better... For the most part. I've been sick since Sunday night.

I'm hoping I will be better by Saturday or Sunday.

So glad your feeling better. Hope you feel better by then as well. Looks like nicer weather.

The auction in Nowata this Saturday looks like a good one: coronation sussex, delawares, welsummers, and possibly some English orpingtons.
I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!

Start drinking you some Apple Cider Vinegar in water. I gave it to my kids in apple juice and you don't taste it until the after taste. Not too bad. Its suppose to be really good if you have a cold or cough. I had a cold for only 2 days when I drank the stuff straight

(what I looked like after). I had to just get it over with. Or if you want to heat some water. Add some lemon and lots of honey. Should help coat the throat. Honey is the only thing I know of that coats the throat and has natural stuff (Oh geeze I can't think to save my life... that stuff that helps the immune system. whatever). So tea with honey would be good for you. Just stay hydrated. You might try a humidifier...
My hubby is a nurse and he said the only thing he can think of is honey. Lot of help he is.

I have yet another question for everyone out there.
idunno.gif
I plan on going to the auction this weekend and I really want to bring home some birds. So... what do YOU do when you quarantine your new chickens? What I mean is what do you house them in or do they get their own yard. I am planning ahead before I get them just to get some things ready... just incase. How long do you normally quarantine them also?

I quarantine for 30 days. Lord Dingwald has had a cough, though, so he and Lady D have been in quarantine sincei brought them home, about two months now. I've tried Duramycin, now I'm trying Tylan. I originally wormed them with Wazine, so now they'll get Safe-guard. Dorcus has a cough now too, poor boy. I'm starting to think the Dorkings aren't as cold hardy as the others.

I bought a thermometer with a humidity gauge to put in the big coop. Last night it was reading 34 degrees with over 100% humidity. The coop is not air tight. Have ventilation through open eves on south and north ends. The top of the east side is still open. The top of the west side is covered in a loose shaker shingle pattern were the over lapping boards have gaps. There is a large open wire screen transom window over the door.

That humidity is way too high, right? but we are having precipitation so maybe that's why??? Thoughts?

Try some hot lemon tea with honey. Take a spoon of honey as often as needed to soothe your throat. Sit under a blanket with a humidifier (or use a small table and drape the blanket over it, then you can read or whatever while you sit with the humidifier). Sleep elevated on pillows. You can use vicks vaporub on your chest and the bottoms of your feet. If you have access to essential oils, Eucalyptus or Maleluca can be added to the humidifier water and you can mix them with a dab of olive oil to rub on your throat, chest, and the bottom of your feet. Here's some more ideas using oils: http://www.essentialoils.co.za/treatment/coughs.htm

I like eucalyptus oil. You can rub it on the bottoms of your feet or put a few drops in your humidifier's inhalant cup. It's like a natural Vicks. I know Akin's Natural Foods carries oils, not sure where else.
