***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Thank you guys. I know you all understand a chicken that isn't a chicken, but is closer to being a dog. I could hold Dorcus on my lap and he would climb up my shirt to preen my hair and nestle his head against my neck. If I stood still he would walk up and lean himself against my leg. He would follow me around and wanted to be right next to me whenever possible. With most chickens you know their "affections" are food-driven, but there's that rare one who truly seems to bond with a human, and Dorcus was that one.

Now I have to get one of the EEs back from Cathie Sue as a companion for Zima, my little Isbar. Zima and Dorcus were hatchmates, and were inseparable. When Dorcus started to get sick and I brought him inside, Zima started to go downhill, too. I brought her inside and put her back with Dorcus and she perked right back up, as if she hadn't been sick at all. If she gets sick because he's gone, it will be too sad.

The only one I would be more devastated at losing would be Bumpers. If anything ever happens to her I'm going to need a bottle of blackberry wine and a whole box of tissues.
Sniffles or Stipples or Snapples or whatever the dang name is, will be hanging out with litte Zima soon. I'm sorry about little Dorcus.

Welp, I lost my Dorcus tonight, and I'm just heartbroken beyond words. I'm very thankful Dusti was here when it happened. How in the world we can go and get so attached to a chicken is beyond me, but I sure did love that bird.
sorry for your loss.

On a happier note, I have had three chicks hatch so far today. :jumpy  They are some of the ones I was worried about.  Poor Buffy. tomorrow will be 21 days and no sign of hatching.  I haven't candled them but will do so tom..  She's hatched 100% in two batches and raised 12 for me I put under her from the hatcherie. She is such an awesome mama so I'll be checking with NanaKat to see if she has any young enough to put under her, if these don't hatch. m If not, maybe someone else will have some that I can afford.:D

Yes, I have a few of the Cochin/Wyandotte babies that are 2 to 5 days old. If she has been a good mom you can slip them under her in the evening and she should bond with them. They will bond to her warm feathered body and will already know about food and water.
The babies I have given to broody mothers learn quickly to come to the hen's calls.

We bond with special animals because we nurture. It is hard to lose a favorite. Had a Spangled OEGB that was no bigger than a minute who was that sweet...called him My Buddy and he would ride my shoulder everywhere talking to me the whole time.

Why on earth would the local Atwoods not have any chicken feed, except for layer ration? I need to get some scratch feed and they have none! Nor any cracked corn, just layer ration pellets and crumbles...

I guess they are sold out?

Great. Hubby says we can't pick them up until Wednesday. So you think that would be too late? I can leave her on the eggs until then. I know when I gave her the hatcherie chicks, that they were probably 3 days old, if they shipped them out at one day like they say they do. Hubby thought some were older because I had ordered mixed breeds and they had to wait until they all hatched. That was just his thought. I'm not sure I agree, but he knows more about chickens than I do. I have lab work to do in Tulsa tom. and can't cancel because it has to be back before my Dr. appt. Hubby has something on Tuesday, I forgot what he said. It might be service work, and if it's something that could be done on Wednesday, maybe he can cancel. It's so late now that we wouldn't be back for chores. We don't do business on Sundays. unless our ox is in the mire so to speak. What colors are they? I really don't want white, as I free range during the day and just don;t seem to have much luck. I'm so excited. I'm going to get some anyway, I was just hoping Buffy could have her babies too. Also do you raise GoldenLaced Wyandotts and if you do what are your prices on them?
