***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Please do post it, I would be interested in seeing it.
ok. I'll send it . It's on my e-mail and it's long. should I copy and paste or is there a way to put a link to it on my e-mail. I'm very very computer ignorant, illiterate or whatever. If someone can walk me through putting it on a link I will. Otherwise I''ll just copy and paste. We justed watched a movie and I was going to bed, but thought I'd check my mail first. Night everyone.

I wondered that, but she has no respiratory symptoms at all and I thought Tylan was for respiratory infections only? Would it hurt to do the Tylan injections AND the Tetracycline (in the water) at the same time? She has obviously not felt well for a while and is quite thin. She isn't light but injections into the breastmeat are going to be tricky.
Tylan can be used for a number of things and the good thing about Tylan 50 is you can give it orally and it is just as effective as the injections. Dr. Herrin told me that and he's right, it worked. Hubby has dealt with bumblefoot before, but couldn't tell by the pictrue, but he agrees with NanaKat and said treat it the same. And yes Tylan works on bumblefoot

OK I need help. Does this look like bumblefoot? This poor girl has been acting listless for about a week, I finally brought her in to look at her closer tonight and was shocked by the swelling in her foot. Her heavy foot feathering hid the swelling well from a distance. It is so swollen she is oozing blood between the scales and it definitely hurts her. The pad of her foot is 4-5X the size of the other and she can't bring her toes together like the other foot.

I've never treated bumblefoot myself but have been told it is fairly simple. Will someone walk me through this?

ETA: There is no scab, and no hard core to her pad, the whole foot is just terribly swollen. So I'm thinking surgery is a bit premature- daily soakings, betadine dressing, and a round of tetracycline first?
Hubby said I gave you wrongful info. sorry. He said on Bumblefoot penicillian, amoxacillian and I think Linconycin You can get the fish amoxicillian and it's the same thing so you wouldn'g neeed a prescription, Sorry my spelling is so bad. I can't keepmy eyes open right now but he said if no one on here walks you through it, he will. Sorry about giving you wrong info. I just assumed since Dr. Herrin said Tylan works on fowl cholera and pen is a gram neg antibiotic aand also works on fowl cholera that tylan would too.

I know that you all have talked about fermenting feed recently but for the life of me can not find the posts....what are the ingredients that y'all tend to use? Also, have any of you tried using an all grain sweet feed to ferment? - It has a molasses component to it.

I will check PetsMart today. I see a product online called Fish Mox that they may carry, it comes in 250 and 500 mg. Which strength, and how do I give it to her? I'm thinking PB + bread with the amox pill opened and sprinkled on top?

Would soaking her feet in salt water also be soothing? Along with the meds?

@bardies i don't know that using that feed would be a problem, i mix crumble, scratch and acv water so it is the consistancy of cookie batter- give it a few days and it should start bubbling

Sonny update- woke up this morning to the deepest crow i have ever heard- his first attempts-
his feet seem to be healing, he only has one nail left, poor guy, and is eating only fermented feed, putting on weight nicely

and the newest girl in town- the Princess Pricilla, actually i need to rename her, but that is what her original owner named her- when i asked the breed she said silver penciled bantam- okkkkk...... ummmm...thats a color not a breed, right?? Someone on byc suggested dutch bantam cochin mix, what ever she is, she is sweet and a consistant layer

No big secrets grain product (whole, chopped, pellets, crumbles, mash anything grain product) + water + time = ferment. It won't begin ferment in this cold outside, you will need warmer temps (like inside) to start the ferment.

Sweet feeds would ferment well, they would start quicker for sure more accessible food for the microbes.,

Some people add things like unpastureized apple cider vinegar w/ mother, or butter milk, or sour dough, or bread yeast or, or, or......................... none of it is ness. but could make it initiate faster. I never used any of them.

I am a mess this morning
barnie.gif
.....I feel like the worst chicken keeper (I know we all have to live and learn). I posted a while back about my girls losing saddle feathers do to an overzealous roo (I could kill him but I do want to breed him), and I have been keeping a close eye out for damage (I promise). I have hen aprons on the way (thank you to whoever suggested that btw) but it is difficult to get near the hens that have the worst damage. The ones that have been getting it the worst are my RIR and JG which are just not friendly birds.

So getting to my point as to why I am a mess, I did manage to handle one of my JG and thank god because that poor girl has a 3 inch gash down one side under her wing

. The injury is a couple of days old and thankfully there is no sign of infection. She is in my laundry room right now enjoying some left over noodles and egg, but I feel so bad that I didn't see it earlier. Is there anything I can do for an old injury? I haven't put anything on it because her body seems to be doing it's job. She seems just fine and is eating, drinking, pooing, and trying to get out of her cage.

As for the roo, I have a brooding room (empty now) connected to my coop but I don't want to put the roo in by himself with it as cold as it is. I checked all of the others as good as I could and the poor JG seems to be the only injury.
What do you all think about removing his spurs, they are getting quite large and I am sure that is what damaged my hen? I just feel so bad and don't want any more of my ladies hurt until the aprons come in at the end of the week, hopefully

Hope everyone is tucked away warm, we got some snow last night and it is chilly!

I cant address the spurs thing....but we have all done stupid things or made the wrong decisions (or allow our birds to do stupid things that get them killed or sick or injured). We can only do what we can do. The fact that we try to do better and want to do better is a HUGE thing! Bad chicken keepers are those that don't care. We do!

It sounds like she is doing good enough - I'd keep her in the laundry room unless it becomes such a huge stressor that it is counter productive. Vetricin might help the wound continue to heal. Observe for signs of infection or it getting worse.

Mostly don't beat yourself up. Take what you have now and move forward.
