***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I know you'll are talking chickens now. But I was interested who all raises goats???

I have goats for sale. Wha t are u looking for?
Oye what a day, after cleaning up from the chicken had to deal with this:

Poor baby tripped on a rug with a plastic container of snacks in her hand. Luckily the two cuts are small, at first I thought I was headed to the ER with the amount of blood that was pouring out!
Poor baby, She looks like she's taking it ok. I sent you two emails. an extra on Valbazen brcause I didn't think he gave enough info on it

Still catching up so someone else may have already said this-but it's quite possibly frostbite. I'm treating a pair right now for it and the male's foot is swollen way up but no scabs, etc like the female's feet. I think because it's higher up or something. I'm prepared for him to lose the bottom of his leg, she's going to lose several toes. Makes me sick.

Off any topic, but how does one give an ovation on this forum?

You click the little thumbs up under the person's posting. Notice on your own posts it is "grayed out" so you can't ovate yourself.

Oh that did not even occur to me!! Off to Google pictures (and bracing myself for them}. She is bottom of the pecking order and maybe even sleeping the floor. What should I expect for a mild case? There is swelling in the foot and toes and that loose spot of skin that looks like a puncture would, I guess it could be damaged skin sloughing off. There is no blackening anywhere, will it heal up fine then?

I know that you alle talked about fermenting feed recently but for the life of me can not find the posts....what are the ingredients that y'all tend to use? Also, have any of you tried using an all grain sweet feed to ferment? - It has a molasses component to it.
I've not tried that, but I think I will after seeing what Kass said about it. I just use straight scratch. It was too gloppy and mushy when I mixed layer pellets in with the scratch. But the scratch alone works great poured overtop their pellets. OMG they love it!

Click the little thumbs up at the bottom of their post, it'll also give you and option to make a comment.

Tara, was that you who's hen got tore up by the rooster? I'm one of the ones who suggested aprons for them but I'll tell you a secret. I had a hen 2 yrs ago who got tore up down to the bone by a rooster. He was a teenaged Cochin rooster and I put him with 2 Easter Eggers. She ended up with ripped skin and bone showing through, talk about guilt! All I did was give her a nice sudsy bath and keep her inside for about a week, I still have her and she's gorgeous. I've lost patience with teenaged roos. At the 1st sign that girls are loosing feathers they go into the Boy Yard or a Bachelor pen until they're older. The main ones that wear aprons now are the ones who tend to "offer" themselves to the rooster a little too often. Little husseys.

Quote: I'm prepared for mine to lose the whole bottom of his leg, so I don't know if it will heal. I've had them inside for 2 wks now and the hen just finally lost 1 toe, 4 more to go. So it does take a long time to heal. The male (with the swollen foot/leg) is a Modern Game bantam, so at least he'll be able to get around on 1 leg better than a standard sized bird would. Most the pictures show blackened toes on Google.
I feel terrible. They had a heater in their pen even. I have no idea why they got frostbite and no one else did.

Oh boy. Teenage roos... I will be heading there soon. Not ready for the teen years and their drama.
@Rinda: Ooo! That looked like it hurt! Hope your little one bounced back quickly after her fall. My kids have bloodied their lips so much. Our 4 yr old still has two left feet and falls gracefully. Always getting a boo boo but occasionally gets up and dusts her hands off then she's back to playing. So sad when they get hurt. Also your hen looks really relaxed! I love giving them foot soaks when they have a soar foot and they just melt into the water. Lol! Its cute.

@Robin: I tried to get some pics and the best ones I could finally get after chasing the two cochins around (they arnt photogenic) were the best I could get.

This one is much larger than the other. This one likes to stand tall and ruffle the neck feathers at the other. Brat.

The smaller of the two. This is the one that has the frostbite on the feet.
I haven't heard any crowing, no eggs but the bigger one has clucked alarmingly like a roo. I don't know..

Mystery solved! Here she is at the "chicken spa" including scrambled egg yolk and medicated water at hand. She wouldn't eat but drank several tablespoons after she had soaked for about 15 minutes. I let her soak until the water started to cool, about 30 minutes total. She had her eyes closed for much of the time and was totally RELAXED.

Once I dried her off the soak had reduced the swelling enough to see this:

It looks like a puncture wound between her toes, from the TOP. Not sure how she could have done that. Poor girl, wish I had checked her over good when I first noticed her acting strange last week but it was TOO COLD and I didn't WANT to. Shame on me. Hopefully I caught it in time. I sprayed with Veterycin, packed with triple antibiotic cream, and poured some betadine on the bandage too. Amoxicillian is supposed to be here Saturday so she'll stay on Tetracycline until then. If that does the trick I may not need to do the Amox at all but I'm guessing it will need the stronger med.

What about penicillin, wouldnt that work?

Quote: well, with the temps we've been having i'm surprised more aren't having issues- i have sonny in a cage with sheets- soak and spray his feet daily- and don't mess with the scabs- so far he only has one remaining toenail- not a whole lot you can do but prevent infection- they will adjust- look at emily

on the silky, i would think antibiotics and vetricin spray, and keep a close watch on them
