***OKIES in the BYC III ***

First baby is finally out of the shell and drying out. I can see the light color dot on the head clear as day so, it's a boy! So if anyone wants a day old Cream Legbar chick he is up for who ever wants him! Right now I noticed his toes are curled. What in the world causes that? In the shell too long? Well, just waiting for him to dry so I can tape his toes up. Poor little guy. One other has piped but still not getting out. One is peeping. The last two I am afraid have not survived. No movement for the last few hours. I have a straw I can poke through the holes of the bator to tap on the shells and I don't get anything where use to I could get some movement. So hopefully at least 3 out of 5. Im going to be optimistic. Praying for at least one girl!!!!

Question for all you people who raise furry legged chickens... I'm having a terrible time with these Brahma bantam hatchlings. I'm going to boost the vitamins on the breeding pair, because the chicks aren't thriving, and they're all being born with spraddleleg. The poor babies spend almost all their time on their backs.

I've been trying the bandaid brace trick, but because of the fuzziness of the legs, the bandaids aren't sticking. And when they do stick, they stick to the feathers. Is there a better way of handling this?

Although it might not matter, if they don't survive. Poor little babies.

Rinda, what was it you treated your birds with when their babies didn't thrive? I'm considering treating this as a bacterial infection, just in case.
I cut the whole bandaid in half the long way and put the padded part around the leg, (and feathers), and put the sticky parts together in the middle. Then, on the second leg I do the same -put those sticky parts over the first ones in the middle between the legs.
I think the hardest part is getting the distance between the legs just right.
When I get it right it works very well and the chick "heals" fast andf it walks fine in just a day or two.
I find it very had to hold the chick and do the "tapeing" at the same time so , if I can find a volunteer" I have somebody else hold the chick while I fuss with the bandaid strips.

I know u have already gotten really good advice on this, but I just love the info The Chicken Chick has on it. I think it's a really great site for things like this.

is there any way you can get those you aren't sure on and listen to them, tap the shell and see if you hear anything?

I agree w/ Robin. We had two I thought were dead and one that I was afraid mama would peck to death because she had two others. I think they were just to big for the shell and being a first time mama she was confused and probably tried to help them out, She's a great mama w/ the three that are left. called NK. and by the time I had gotten off the phone Hubby broke around the shell by the head and guess what, live chicks. They are really doing great w/ mama right now.
