***OKIES in the BYC III ***

True5 I may sound like a broken record but give the splay legged baby some poly-vi-sol vitamins (without iron kind). It does wonders. Hobbles are hit and miss in my experience, sometimes they help sometimes not.
How much do I give it? Just a few drops? And how do you administer it? It has the eye dropper which will help... Thank you!

EDIT: I found the post a few days ago that answered my questions. I took the hobbles off to let it relax the skin for a little while and the poor thing was holding it's foot up like it was hurting or just didn't know how to stand on it. I really hope the vitamins do a miracle. If they do you will be hearing about my happy dance! Thanks Robin for the tip!

What a BEAUTIFUL day!!! Going to start putting the marans out during the day in a pen and let them get use to everyone and the outside (which is a bit of a shock for them as the see other chickens). I'm hoping to get them use to it so they can permanently move out. I have 26 chicks that will be needing their box in the garage pretty soon. Oh boy... 26. I don't think I was really thinking on the chicken math there. I got eggs and the breeders of two breeds: Here are two extra!. Then one breeder: Here, I have six olive egger eggs, would you like them for $10? Me: Oh sure! The more the merrier!
My way of thinking: Oh not ALL of them will hatch.

About to go check on Jenie ( My silkie)

This is my 11 yr old daughter who is discovering how to use the internet. She is obsessed with Silkies and doesn't know how to make a formal introduction of "Hi, I'm new here. I love Silkies. My favorite is a white Silkie named "Jenie".".

Awesome... my 4 yr old just spilled half the bottle of Poly-vi-sol all over the place.

One of those times you either have to laugh or cry... Laughing feels better! Sorry to tell you it stains terribly...

don't ask me how I know that!

Lol! Luckily she only got a little on her brother's coat and my older daughter's back pack. His coat is black and her back pack (part it got on) is gray. So no big deal there. When things like this happen I just think, they are only little once. It was an accident and the poor girl had an expression of "I didn't mean to" on her face. So yah, its

at the mess but I have to laugh at it. She thought it was her meds for her cough and was going to give it to me to give her a dose. Goof ball.

Glad to know my boys aren't the only ones that think they need medicine all of the time!!!!

The warm weather has the critters coming out to play. My dogs have been making a fuss & chasing varmints since sundown. Maybe my chickens will decide to lay some eggs this wk.

I hear you on the critters :-/ I found one of my precious Orloff girls gutted with her head gone last week. God I hate that. I was sure it was another possum because the carnage looked the same. Last night my husband checked outside in the dark and saw a possum in one of the chicken yards (did you know they can climb fences???)

I go by "Tonys Law", that has preference here.  ~ SSS ~
:I will protect my flock from "anything", at any time, in any way necessary!

Yes, we enforced Tony's law on the possum. It was a female and she had a huge mass of newborn possum babies in her pouch. I felt bad until my husband pointed out babies grow up to kill chickens just like mama. It was her and her babies or my babies. I won.

Still having problems--can read but not directly post on the forum. True5, your chick holding up the leg may have a slipped Achilles tendon. If so, it can be fixed fairly easily if you'll do it right away. Take the joint of the leg it is holding up and firmly but gently roll it from side to side. If it is the Achilles tendon, you can feel it popping into and out of place. Take a very, very narrow piece of duct tape, and roll the tendon into place and tape it to keep it there. Wind the tape around and around directly on itself so it remains narrow. If you do it properly, the chick can walk normally and it will heal in a few days. Oils in the chick's skin will loosen the tape, so it doesn't harm the leg at all. If, however, the groove for the tendon to run in is deformed, there is nothing that can be done and the leg will become rigid in the held up position. You can't go wrong--if you do nothing, it is virtually a death sentence, but if you try, you could save the chick. I've saved several guinea fowl and silkie chicks using this method, as have others I've told about it. good luck.

That's usually the tell-tale sign of possums in the coop alright. If only the crown of the head is gone, and everything else is normal, then you can assume a weasel is the culprit.

Thank you Betsy! I will take a look at it. My only problem is it has fuzz on it's legs but if this is the case it will have to have a fuzz cut.

26 of them! Thought I would share a picture with cuteness!
Edit: please ignore the turd. I just changed their paper towels and this is just how they show their appreciation.
