***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Oh Kassaundra, they're beautiful! Having them on my property will mean a great deal to me. My grandmother loved them dearly.

So did my Gma, over the years she had bought some very pricy fancy ones, after her alzhiemers got so bad she had to live in a facility that had locked doors and 24/7 supervision, I went to her house to collect some of her irises, but people had dug them up and stole them right from her yard!!!!! I don't know when, it could have been anytime w/I the last year or so when she was so bad and we were so distracted w/ just her normal care and keeping her safe to notice her flowers. And that was w/ my father living next door and people, family, friends, health care workers coming and going all the time.

I can always count on you guys to give great advice! I am in the market for my first incubator. I was told by a hatchery owner that he has had good luck with the cheap looking Styrofoam things. I definitely want one with fan and auto turner.

What do you guys think of the Hovabator?
I am concerned about the turner though, won't the chicks feet get stuck in between the rows? Are the thermometers reliable and should I get a backup one? What about the humidity control? Can I use a liner with the auto turner?
Ahh I haven't even started yet and I'm stressed LOL

Amazon has a variety of the BrinSea Incubators. Take a look at them first. Then decide.

I would have been devastated. It would be like a physical blow to the heart. I can't wait until some of the ones I planted last year bloom. Maybe in the next couple of years I can share some of them with you.

I agree with the recommendation of the brinsea. I have had the Styrofoam and lost a ton of eggs that way. I do occasionally use it for hatching now. The turners can be removed and it is recommended at lockdown to just remove the turner.

Got this pic online but it is my blueberry on wheels exactly (I don't have a pic of mine on my phone):
Nice!

Neat looking car. My first car was a fiat. My dad sold them for awhile, so when he quit selling them we each received a fiat.

I have never owned one but when this one finally dies I will probably get another. It is such a great car to drive. It even has heated seats and with my hip injury still bothering me after a year it is great for the pain.

Congrats on the new car muesky. Those are cute little cars.
Thanks! I love it!

Congrats on the "wheeled blueberry". When we got a car this year I was looking at the fiat also, but my shiny orange car caught my eye before I made it to the fiats.

@Kyzmette I don't make it to Tulsa real often, and when I do it would be mid day on a week day. (for Gary's Dr apt) Will you be at the capon clinic?
Not sure I could buy an orange car but had never considered buying a blue one either until I found this one.. It is so fun to drive but I am still figuring out things on it. I did find the door locks which are actually the door handles that also are the locks.. Everything is compact and multi-functional on this thing it is really cool.

I have two Havobators. One has a fan and turner the other is a still air just for hatching. Here is what I did to mine. I painted the insides with an acrylic paint (they are kind of psychedelic) than sealed it with a clear varnish that I reapplied every year I used it. You really need to change out the wafer thermostat every year, just because they go out at the worst times. But they are cheap so it is not big deal. I have two thermometers. One is a digital with a hydrometer and one is just a house thermometer. I power up my incubators for two weeks before putting eggs in them and check the temperature a couple of times a day to make sure it is accurate and stable. It is important to make sure the incubator is in an area with little temperature fluctuation but I still keep my covered with a heavy blanket or towel. Also you really need to leave them alone once the eggs are in there. Candle at 10-12 days and right before they are ready to go into the hatcher. Other then that don't open the incubator. It drops the temperature and humidity and it takes forever to get it back. I have a little plastic hose mounted in the bottom of the incubator, that goes into a reservoir with a sponge in it to add water when needed so I don't have to open the incubator.
The hatcher is set up a couple of weeks after the first batch of eggs are set. Same procedure as the incubator.
Honestly I don't use the egg turner often I prefer to put the eggs in cardboard egg cups and I just tilt the incubator back and forth daily. You can fit a few more eggs in the incubator that way.
Other may have different ideas or techniques but that is what I do. The incubators work okay, and when I follow this routine I get a really good hatch rate. the main thing is to leave it closed while incubating the eggs. I still prefer using broody hens.

I also like the Brinsea, I don't have the turning cradle so it was more affordable and it really is not big deal the tilt the whole thing a couple times a day. I'm there looking at the eggs anyway.

Yes! Although Audra isn't an Audra anymore... Penny would work if Audra is a Leonard. But since Audra is so... ummm.... ambiguous.... Sheldon might be a better choice.
