***OKIES in the BYC III ***

What duck breeds did they have at TSC?  The Muskogee store only had tufted, and there was no breed description other than "straight-run ducklings."

It was a straight run mix with no listed breeds so I did quick google searches to make best guesses at what I was selecting. I think I got a blue Swedish, a black Swedish, a khaki Campbell, and a black runner. They had Pekins and what I think were rouens in the bin too.

Up until this spring we have only had barnyard mix chickens and they are all free range. So you never know what kind of chicks we would get!

This year I have new pens built and I can't wait to have some gorgeous purebred chickies!

Does everyone here mostly free range? Or do you have your chickens separated by breed?
I free range and all my breeds will be mingling with each other. I just have to wait for my other breeds to get big enough to mingle with the big birds.

I'm sorry, Nana :-( Good old hen friends are hard to lose
This weather is just crap. I've been pouring hot hot water over scratch & pellets along with heating fermented stuff up in the microwave. It makes me feel better to give them something steaming when it's so cold. These new Seramas loooove the fermented feed. Channing never has liked it, when his little Henlet has her face shoved in a bowl of it he stares at her like she's eating her own poo

I think the news said it was going to be close to 70 Friday?! What on earth is going on???
I know! I saw a deal on facebook where it said only in Oklahoma will it be all four seasons in one week.

Truth in that!

So I am new to the whole backyard chickens scene. I currently have 3 pulleys in a brooder in my kitchen haha. Is there any way to tell what breed they are by their chick colorings? Oh yeah I am in the Enid area
WELCOME!!!! I saw the picture and someone posted maybe one being a buff orpington. I just happened to get two today so I can tell you some characteristics. They are a darker yellow. Their feet are pink and if you look when their wing feathers come in they are a light tan/brown color. Don't know if that helps but I was looking at some chicks in the same bin and the feed store owner said that the other breed had a different color of feet than this breed. You might go back and ask what breed.

I DID IT! I have gone CHICKEN CRAZY!! Like I NEED more chickens!!!!
First off, we went to the ONLY feed store called "Lee's feed and Country store" on 11th and S 193rd Ave (over by the Hard Rock area) in Tulsa that carried any medicated pig feed. It was $23 for a 50 lb sack. It has, sorry I can't remember exactly but it started with an "L", lanamyacin? Something that sounded close to the galamyacin. I asked the feed store owner if that was close to the same medication and he said "yup". So I decided if that is all I can find then this is it. I will try it and see how well it works with the cochin. She is really sounding bad and her face is starting to swell a little again.
So at the feed store he had a bunch of little peeping chicks and ducks and cute fuzzy bunnies. Different than what Atwoods had.

So I got two chicks.

Yes I got two more chicks.

Two buff orp. I even asked him if they were American or if they were import/English. HA! He looked at me like I was some lunatic and was "Uh, they aren't imported. They are all local." HAHAHA!

I felt so dumb, but at least I knew what I was talking about. Even my husband was looking at me like I was crazy! Whatever. They are local... HAHA! But its like I needed more chicks anyway and I am planning on two more from Rinda to add and I really think I have a chicken "collecting" problem. Or is there such a thing as hording chickens? Im going to make my own reality show of animal hording and I will be the first on there with chickens!!! HAHA!

I think my husband has thrown his hands in the air and gave up on telling me no more. He knows me better than that I guess.

EDIT: I took the tag off the bag and the medication is called Lincomycin. I looked it up and read a little and it is given for respiratory which I am happy about but it is also for helping pigs (and chickens if given for this reason) to gain weight. So I guess it kind of is something to help make Schwarzenegger pigs and poultry. I'll let you all know if it helps my cochin and her horrible respiratory thing going on. This junk is immune to Tylan, so it's going to be interesting...
I couldn't resist.

too funny True on the imported- so many are clueless!!LOL! i avoid feed stores this time of year, i have no resistance at all! So hubby does the feed

anyone know if a chick can hatch with a detached aircell? this lone cochin does still have a detatched cell, the only one to show development

Great photos of your rump less rooster.

Went to take hot water to top off the water tubs this morning and found my older Cochin hen Joy, laying in the nest box. I usually pet her head and when I did, discovered she was gone. The two eggs under her were still warm. She was always one of the first to run to me for treats and clucked all the way alerting others I was coming. She will be missed.

It has warmed up to 8 degrees now with windchill in the negative numbers. Hopefully all the pregnant momma cows will keep their legs crossed until tomorrow.

Bardies.....on the Oxine, I use a 1/2 tsp per gallon of water for drinking water. For disinfecting eggs before hatching, I use a 5% solution.
Sorry about Joy. It always hurts to lose one.

I have been keeping up w/ the posts but haven't answered any. I've finally had some extra energy so I've been trying to catch up because of this weather. I had been putting layer over layer of hay in the chicken yard so their feet wouldn'[t get cold. Never again. It took me two days to get it all up and man was it heavy. I was going to get the dog poop in the yard cleaned up and didn't get it today, instead I cleaned coops again and started on the barn. I have to do it tom/ We usually do it daily but it's been since I was sick with my infected leg and with 6 big dogs u just can't imagine.

Glenn doesn't usually let it get behind, but he's been busy putting up more fence and emptying his house. We've been married 4 years now and still hadn't gotten most of the things from his house. Now he has to because the roof had started to leak and is now falling in. All this stuff. EVERYWHERE. He said we could have a garage sale I said I just want to donate what we don't want and get it out of here so I can walk around again both porches are loaded down too.

Yes, we should of been doing this a little at a time. The Dr. said my leg was infected again, and put me on antibiotics again. He usually cultures so he knows what to use but he didn't this time.
The chicks are getting so big. They are beauties. I think I have 5 pullets and 3 roos. The littlest one we thought a pullet is 100% rooster. He is already getting his wattles and thinks he;s a big guy. I named him Hercules. They all run up for treats and are quite spoiled. I can't stick my hand in their box w/o them attacking it. I'll try to remember to get some pics of them during daylight tom.

I've always been free ranging, but buy purebred hens and roosters. I've hatched a barnyard mix and keep the pullets, so this year I'm going to put some in breeding pens for awhile. I do get lucky and get some purebreds hatched because I keep them in different coops and the roosters are pretty watchful over their girls, although sometimes they get sneaky if one comes in the chickenyard and he just happens to be there. Mine fly over about everything so I'll have to , er, hubby will have to build something with tops on them.

That's too cool! DH bought his brother a snorg tee hat for Christmas. It looked like this one:

I don't know what Tractor supply sells but Atwoods gets everything from Ideal Poultry' They sure are cute. I'm used to the scovys, and they are always light when they are born so these are really different.

Yes, they can. Put it point down in an eggcrate for two days to let the air gather at the top, then keep it in the crate when you put it in the incubator. Tilt the crate several times a day instead of turning the egg. Of course the chances of successful hatch are reduced, but I have a beautiful Isbar I hatched from a scrambled aircell.

Oh, and make sure there's a hole in the bottom of the eggcrate cell you have the egg in, for air circulation.
