***OKIES in the BYC III ***

One of my 4 buff Orpington bantams has laid her 1st egg just before noon. 28 weeks old today.
Another is singing,
and another seems to be in great pain
.
I'm worried about her. She spent 30 minutes in the nest clucking in repetitions of 3 clucks. Finally, it softened , but still she clucked. Then, after another 20 minutes she came out of the hutch, and was in a fluff and straining. I looked in the nestboxes, but she hadn't laid. I couldn't stand watching her, and had to leave. Fixing to go back out and check on them.

if i have a pullet or hen having problems, being her first egg, betcha its tough, i put them in a warm bath, massage them and give them a tums in the drinking water, it gives them a calcium boost and relaxes the muscles- hope she does ok...

All's Well. Sometimes we men can be such wimps. I just knew the worst was upon her.
When I reached the pen she was as perky as the rest of the pullets. I searched the hutch, Nada !; then looked on the floor of the pen, and there it was, just as perty an egg as you'd expect. I rewarded her with some millet. Two down, and two to go. Okay; who's next?

Anyone ever deal with incubation and the electricity going out?

Well, we just had that. It quickly went down to 85 then after I threw on a blanket for added insulation it gradually went down to 80. The last half hour it was above 76. I wonder if they still have a chance of making it now

. I was really starting to fReAk out

because not only my eggs but my chicks in the brooder were getting into a tight ball. I think one bantam got a little smooshed and it looks like it may be starting to become lethargic.

We'll see how they do in the next few days. I'm sure they stayed warm but I know it wasn't good for them. I don't think I have ever freaked out about the power being out before like I did today!

i watched my duccle lay her first egg, dang i felt so sorry for her- it looked like child birth!LOL! Poor hens!

we had ice sliding off the roof making all sorts of awful noise, the poor seramas inside were coming ungued, made for some good photos

still no water, doing things the old fashioned way trudging in the ice to the pump...sure makes you appreciate the pioneers

i have heard of hens leaving the nest for hours, the eggs ice cold and they hatched anyway- on the little one, can you pick them up for cuddles and wrap them up in fleece or something??

old timers used to keep a basket with a towel over it with hatching eggs next to the wood stove, does your stove only work on electricity?
i never cared about temp and power outages much till i got chickens

I bet the eggs will be okay, maybe a day late to hatch, setting hens leave the nest to eat and poop and stretch their legs.

Well; learn something every day. I've had chicken all my adult life, but working a regular job, I never spent much time with them. Now that I'm retired, I'm around them more often, and seeing that poor pullet suffering like she was today, I just knew she'd broken an egg inside her. She reminded me of the OooH-AaaH bird. Don't know if you ever heard of it or not. It's an extinct bird that could be heard from a long distance when it laid its Square Egg. OoooH--AaaaH !

WOW... its been a little while since i've been on here.. I've been at school and my parents have been keeping up with my chickens while i've been gone.. It just now hit me that hatching season is upon us and my prized Rhodebar Roo i had raised up and bred last year was made a meal by a stray Jack Russell Terrier.. The same Jack Russell made a meal of all my Rhodebar pullets and cockerels about a month later.. I have one lone Rhodebar pullet now and she's healthy as ever but i lost her breeding partner.. I was a little upset..

Anyways... i was curious if there was anyone around the Oklahoma City/Shawnee/Edmond , Oklahoma area that might have any Rhodebar eggs my mom could hatch off in her elementary school classroom because i wont be able to supply her this year due to my loss..

or.. i kinda like the thought of having some Silver Laced Wyandottes eggs to hatch off.. either or will help

My rhodebars are on strike. When they are laying I will post & hope to trade with a few others that have NPIP flocks

that little Jojo is spoiled rotten all ready, well so has Cole for that matter, he is in the living room learning we aren't ogres...

the way i got Sonny to eat fermented was make sure alot of it has seed in it, took him a few days to learn... gonna try that with these guys,

interesting on the detatched air sac- well, i know these were at least a week old, she had them packed well, the eggs were porous, not sure if that makes a diff? These were to be sonny's future hens... anyone have cochin chicks? i really would rather not get hatchery birds for him
I don't have any fertile eggs yet but when I start hatching them I will let you know. You may want to check with muesky or nankat who has beautiful cochins

Like everyone else I wouldn't worry much. I had a hen who was accidentally locked out of her coop for the day while I went to work and they hatched just fine.
