***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Well; learn something every day.  I've had chicken all my adult life, but working a regular job, I never spent much time with them.  Now that I'm retired, I'm around them more often, and seeing that poor pullet suffering like she was today, I just knew she'd broken an egg inside her.  She reminded me of the OooH-AaaH bird.  Don't know if you ever heard of it or not.  It's an extinct bird that could be heard from a long distance when it laid its Square Egg.  OoooH--AaaaH !:jumpy

I had a pullet that made noises that sounded like a kitten being smothered with a pillow when she laid.

Anyone ever deal with incubation and the electricity going out?

Well, we just had that. It quickly went down to 85 then after I threw on a blanket for added insulation it gradually went down to 80. The last half hour it was above 76. I wonder if they still have a chance of making it now

because not only my eggs but my chicks in the brooder were getting into a tight ball. I think one bantam got a little smooshed and it looks like it may be starting to become lethargic.

We'll see how they do in the next few days. I'm sure they stayed warm but I know it wasn't good for them. I don't think I have ever freaked out about the power being out before like I did today!
I have a bunch of handwarmers for 'just in case' situations. They are supposed to last for several hours. Every once in awhile you get one that doesn't work so good, but mostly they are good - and certainly better than nothing! Good luck with this!!!

Hot water bottles help too...if you have city water and aren't on a well.
Since we are on a well, water doesn't flow when the electricity goes off. Wrapping the incubator in towels or a blanket helps along with hand warmers.

Today is candling day, but I have to wait until Gary gets home, he likes to "help" me candle. He likes the chickens, but really likes the chicks. (doubt he would admit it though) He gets really amused by the rooster's shenanagens. Like when they trick the girl into thinking they really do have a treat when it is just a twig, or when Shakespear thinks one of the other roo'lets is up to no good and he's off at a dead run to find out "what is going on"

some of you may remember Boaz, well his lady is a faverolle named mary, she was a 'problem child' finding a fit anywhere, so i tried them together- they are devoted to each other- well i had them in the bathroom last nite, this is how i found them when i got ready to put them in their cage

Lots of great ideas for when the electricity goes out! Guess whos going to go get a box of hot hands!? Im running to the store and am picking some up today!

Robin, that's so sweet! I love chicken stories like that!

Does everyone else have the bright yellow TSC ad on the sides and top of their pages on here? I keep reading it over and over each time I go to another page. It somehow keeps saying: "Cheryl, you need to go get more baby chicks!" NO!!! I DONT need anymore since my husband is about to flip his lid with as many as we have now! He sees mine, plus our friend Mikala's 18 and I think he's getting a little anxiety at wondering where he's going to house all of them. Even when I tell him I'm only keeping a select few, around two of each breed. Or maybe three... but I tell him two. Oh, and most of my girl SFH. He doesn't need to know that minor detail yet.

Before I forget, that swap at Orshlens is this Sat. at noon. I will be going to try to see if I can sell the silkie cockerel we have. Also still looking for my Jubilee orpingtons... or any English orpingtons for that matter. I know it's a long shot but you never know!

NanaKat, we live outside the city limits, so I don't think we have any restrictions. We have a small acreage (about 8) . Our neighbors are not too close so
they won't have a problem. However, I guess I should check just in case there are some. I have 10 chickens at the time and would like to get 5-6 chicks
to grow. Atwood's in Madill has their chicks in. TSC and Orshlein's are due to get some soon.
