***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I cleaned some pens today. I put my 2 little EE pullet, Chatty Cathy and Gidget, in a dog pen on the lawn while their pen dried. I went to town on an errand and while I was gone our neighbor's pup got out of his yard and opened the dog pen gate and killed them both!

Earlier in the morning my EE cockerel, Shadow, was in their with them. I took him out because the girls were picking on him even though he is bigger than them. I try to tell myself they weren't for breeding. I was just keeping them because they were so friendly and talkative plus for their eggs. Shadow is and the girls were so friendly even though their parents were standoffish.
I'm so sad for you, MJ. It's crushing to lose favorites but it's an extra blow to have the "if only I'd...." thought weighing on your mind.

Anyone want to guess this one. They said it had been there about 3 weeks and it does have feathered feet
My bet is Dark Brahma. If that's what it is I'm guessing female jsudging by the light colored tios already showing through. Mine are wonderful and I hope that's what you've got!

I can't for the life of me get that post to edit. I was trying to say that *judging by the white *tips on the wings it's female. You can sex Brahmas within a few wks if you've had them before.

Busy fixin' up a new 10' x 14' chicken run in the sheep shed. Be moving my Jap BT's in there, and my new RIR Bantams in the larger pen. Got a confirmation on my 3/10 order. Everything was correct except the Rhode Island Reds. They entered Americanas. My original order had RIR's, so I called the Hatchery, and they corrected it. Glad I caught it before they shipped.

I use an old horse trough for my brooder, and a magnetic Walmart Digital TEMP & Humidity Gauge place on the inner wall of the trough, with a 250 Watt Red Grow light for heat.

After a couple or 3 weeks in the brooder, I open its side door and let them venture in their new pen. Trying to encourage them to roost in their coop takes a little time.
