***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Haha just had a STUMPED moment with my chicks- I was basket hatching, two sexlink eggs and 4-5 EE eggs in the same basket, I figured I could use the comb to tell them apart. Well I got 3 single combed chicks. Doh.... how did that happen?? There was a black one with a white headspot (definite male sexlink), a stripey one kind of like a Cream Legbar, a very fluffy splash looking chick, and the regular black EEs with pea combs. Had to think really hard.... I think a few weeks ago when we had a very windy day I had some chickens do some pen hopping. I *think* the stripey girl is a female sexlink (Cream Legbar mom, BCM dad) and the fluffy splash is a RIR mom and Jubilee Orpington dad? Other possible dads would be Ameraucana (all his chicks usually have pea comb so I'm thinking no), or double laced Barnevelder. Yeesh... it's too late to think this through now. I'll share pics in the morning.

Oh no I think I have the wrong heat light it is clear not red but the box said infra red heat light. Will it work?

I don't think it'll matter if you're not brooding a ton of chicks all at once. I've made sure I get red since I read an article that said there were fewer instances of cannibalization under red lights... (Cannibalization??? I'LL TAKE RED!!!!!!!!) But I think they typically only do that in overcrowded conditions.

Hi to all and welcome to all the new people. I'm going to the Coweta auction. Would love to catch up with you face-to-face. I'll be wearing an orange knitted scarf with my burgundy barn coat. I'm about 5' tall.
Hmm...if there's a crowd you won't be able to see me.

I was up early this morning and got a couple pictures of the clean legged bantams I got at Atwoods. I found out they get their chicks from Ideal Poultry. Here is mystery chick no 1

I'll bring your cages. I'm going to wear my bright yellow What The Fox Says T-shirt. I'm bringing a few chairs. If you want to sit in a chair rather than on the wooden benches, I'd be happy to reserve one of my chairs for you : )

good morning, I am a new egg to this, but my research indicated that if a chick has an injury and has bleeding it would be sort of camouflaged by the red light. In other words blood would be difficult to see. If they see blood, and of course smell it, the others would be drawn to the injury and continue pecking at it. In a small space with crowded conditions they even turn cannibalistic. I suspect it is something from their distant DNA as dinosaurs. Anyway, I chose the red bulbs and when I turn out the white lights at night, I can not read the red thermometer so I guess that is how it works. lol

They have been raised successfully with ordinary white light bulbs for decades.

My girls are growing wings like crazy. Sooo much fun to watch them grow, but I gotta get started on a coop ASAP. LOL

BTW if you are having difficulty finding a good hanging height you might consider getting a dimmer switch and mounting it in a small one gang electrical box and have a male plug at one end and a female plug at the other then plug it in and adjust for a desired temp with a thermometer in the brooder. Works for me.

Dusti and I were talking about going to the Coweta auction! Will anybody be taking their kids? I will probably have my granddaughters this weekend and will have to take them with me if I go, so I'd rather they have somebody to hang with or I probably won't be there very long.

We are going to try to be there with my 4 in tow- ages 8, 6, 4, 2. Last time I took electronics for them and they lasted 2 hours but they would much rather have someone to play with!
