***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Dusti and I were talking about going to the Coweta auction! Will anybody be taking their kids? I will probably have my granddaughters this weekend and will have to take them with me if I go, so I'd rather they have somebody to hang with or I probably won't be there very long.
I'll have my grandkids, but not until late, late Friday night, so I won't have them with me at the auction. I'll have an empty lap if you need assistance : )

I cleaned some pens today. I put my 2 little EE pullet, Chatty Cathy and Gidget, in a dog pen on the lawn while their pen dried. I went to town on an errand and while I was gone our neighbor's pup got out of his yard and opened the dog pen gate and killed them both!

Earlier in the morning my EE cockerel, Shadow, was in their with them. I took him out because the girls were picking on him even though he is bigger than them. I try to tell myself they weren't for breeding. I was just keeping them because they were so friendly and talkative plus for their eggs. Shadow is and the girls were so friendly even though their parents were standoffish.

I do have some eggs in the incubator from those parents. Maybe I will get some more like them that are friendly.

On a good note, I now have hatched 24 chicks from my Splash marans pullet and my Blue Copper Marans roo. That Splash is such a good layer. I also have 16 eggs of hers that I put in the incubator Sunday morning and She has layed 3 more since then! I bought a Blue Marans hen at Newcastle for the Marans roo.
-Never put all your eggs in one basket, count all your chicks before they hatch or trust all your breeding plans to one pair of chickens.
sorry for your loss mj

I knew I should've went to the Newcastle auction instead of blanchards lol just curious how do those 2 auctions compare which is better

Ps still lookin for those blue maran hens lol
I agree somewhat with an earlier post. Folks bring eggs and chicks and fowl to the Blanchard auction, but there is usually a lot of junk that one has to sit through as well. The poultry numbers are nothing compared to the Newcastle auction. We go to both because we are so close and it is something to do. I've gotten some excellent birds at Blanchard (and you never know what 'junk' will be sold ... I've gotten some cool stuff there!) - but it takes some commitment from DH to sit through it all. To have to make a trip with the goal of buying birds, I would make Newcastle the priority.

I live in Blanchard and work at the school with two people that work the Blanchard Auction so I am a little biased but I do agree they sell a lot of junk I have gotten some really neat stuff there but waiting around to bid or check out is horrendous. I have been there as late as 3:00 am before and that was because what I was selling was in a lot at the end. I like to look at both auctions but the Newcastle one seems to be cleaner.

Here's my connundrum chicks.

Basket hatched, there were 5 RIR X Ameraucana eggs (supposedly) and 2 Cream Legbar X Black Copper Marans eggs (supposedly). I got 4 EEs (RIR X Am), 1 confirmed sexlink (CL X BCM), and two ?? single comb chicks.

Most EEs look like this, black with pea comb.

One chick is single comb with headspot, so I know it is a male sexlink (Cream Legbar X BCM).

These are the mystery chicks:

Possibilities:

1. The stripe may be an actual cream legbar, BUT the coloring is slightly off from most of my Cream Legbar girls. I'm thinking this is either pure CL or it could be a female sexlink. (This was my first hatch of the sexlink eggs so I don't know what they will look like besides males will be barred).

2. One of them may be from a rooster hopping the fence to the RIR girl- either Barnevelder or Jubilee Orpington. Barnevelders are stripey but not quite like the striped chick. Orpington chicks do look somewhat like the gray chick.

Anyone have anything else I can use to tell? If only the sexlinks had both hatched with Maran leg feathers I would know for sure!

I got a gallon jug of double strength Wazine (34% vs the usual 17%) for $29 shipping and all on Amazon. I've not kept up with follow up dewormings near like I should and while Wazine kills only roundworms, that *is one of the top killers of chicks and adults alike. The more I read up on roundworms the more concerned I became that it's been a big part of my problem all along with young chicks. I was so concerned with coccidia that I overlooked the obvious. Anyway-this is an awesome price, it's 75¢ per ounce bought at feed stores by the pint bottle. This deal works out to 11¢ per ounce. Only need 1/2 oz per gal water. Got here in 2 days, too.

I'm meeting Poco at the Coweta auction Friday to get the chicks I caponized last weekend. The more I thought afterwards of their tiny patient bodies being subjected to my fumbling fingers trying to do surgery on them the more attached I got to them :-( I thought I'd forget about wanting them if I left without them that day. Nope. It didn't help when I got home and my husband said, "They were Barred Rocks?? And you didn't bring them home??" Hey-he pays for feed, I gotta do what the man wants :-D

I placed one of the the Gold Laced Cochin boys yesterday along with a rooster I'd gotten last year at an auction. I'd put $20 as cost in the Craigslist ad to weed people out but I wouldn't take his money, he was a good guy and thrilled to have them. So anyway that leaves me with the other Gold Laced Cochin boy. I'm hoping to find him a couple Blue Cochin girls at the auction. Here's hoping!

PS Rinda, I'll bet the mostly yellow chick is a Splash, is that possible? That's what every one of my Splash's looked like at hatch.

It does look like a splash... but I can't figure out how I would get a Splash from either a Cream legbar egg or a RIR egg. And there was no way for chicks to hop baskets. I don't have any other layers of that shade of blue or brown. I'm puzzled. And no way a blue could be a dad, only a black. The only splash single combs I get are Isbar and there were definitely no Isbars in that basket, and no way for the Isbar to be the daddy.

Sounds like someone may need to go on the Maury Povich show!!!!
