***OKIES in the BYC III ***

So if you have a juvenile, and you find out that it is possibly a color that is sought after (not even sure of how rare but I am getting PM's asking to sell him), what do you do with it? I possibly have ALL boys in my SFH group from the breeder in Arkansas.:barnie Four crested so if I were to breed I don't want to keep them. One non crested. The only non crested is what they are calling a Snowleopard. I honestly don't want to keep him only because if I were to breed him I wouldn't know WHAT I am doing to get his color in his offspring. On another hand I do want to keep him because he is so pretty. Also I would rather not keep him because I would want this color more available to others so they can enjoy it as well. I'm just not sure what I should do... Here is a photo of his color. I just put it on the SFH thread and waiting for them to respond that it is 100% what they are claiming it to be (I posted an other photo a day or two ago of him and it really is a bad pic of his detail so I had to give more of a description and that is what they are going by). What would you all do? Maybe I can "rent" him out. HA! Here he is standing. Hes about 8 weeks old, hatched around mid Feb. I'm too lazy to get up and get the calendar I have it written down on or I could tell you exactly. He has a little comb but has waddles coming in. One of the crested is already trying to crow. Cracks me up!
That is stunning. Good luck deciding what to do!

Thanks y'all for helping me with my sick hen last week. Unfortunately, she died Saturday night.

I just haven't had time to get on here. She was just too sick when I caught it. The rest of the flock (all 3 of them

) look to be doing great though. I've cleaned out the lean-to where I had her and I'm going to let it air out for a couple of weeks before I open it up. Also gonna wait a couple of weeks to get any more hens. How long should I feed my chickens the water with tetracycline in it?
Ironically, now I'm sick and taking antibiotics for a swollen lymph node behind my ear.

I just realized that some of the boards used in my chicken coop are cedar. I know cedar is bad for chickens, don't know why anyone would make a chicken coop with cedar.

Will this wood harm my chickens? It's not the entire coop but there are several boards inside the coop including the roost bar made of cedar. I can't believe I am just now realizing this.

Any suggestions? Put sealant on it or get a new coop?

How long has the cedar been there? If it is older and aged I would think it is fine. I would probably replace the roost bar though to non-cedar. Untreated 2x4s work great, most people recommend turning them wide side up so they can cover their toes good with their feathers in the winter.

Not sure how old the wood is, I'k say, not very old. My husband and I may go through and replace all of the cedar especially the roost.

I guess the chickens will be able to get up there okay, just like a bar? Are you saying to put the wide part of the board flat?

Yes, the wide part of the board. You don't want the roosts too high, especially for heavy breeds they can hurt their feet when they jump down, depending on the design my coops have 8" roosts in a grow pen up to 4 ft roost with a lower 3 ft roost for them to jump to first. Some of mine are wide side 2x3s some are narrow side 2x4s just because that was how they were when I bought the coop. I really like the 2x3s with the wide side up but a lot of people recommend the 4" side facing up of a 2x4.

Rain and now Cold this morning. Post Office called at 7:00am, said : "Your Chicks are here."
48*F inside the shop. Brooder floor temp was 100*F. Unpacked 16 lively little RIR Bantams, and gave them a drink of Blackstrap Molasses Water. After a couple of hours watching them drink, I sprinkled a few pinches of chick starter on a board, and they dug into it like a bunch of lil pigs. Now, if I can get them through the first week, they ought to do okay.

Where are some good places to order birds/eggs in OK. I'm planning on getting into breeding a little for a hobby!!! I'm looking for a white crested polish rooster also!!!

what breed or breeds are you looking to get into?

I don't know much about polish but I bet the white crested chocolate is going to be all the rage soon.
