***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Alright! Thanks for telling me about the not-chicken related selling, that's definitely helpful.
"A ton of stock." I love looking at all the types of chickens, it's very exciting to me!
Sorry about your eggs, I'm hoping you get pretty chicks from them.
I'd love to meet some fellow BYC'ers, but i'm pretty darn young. (in the teens, eek)
My grandfather has me searching around for all the chicken related things..he's not computer capable!

Were you just wanting layers or birds that are just nice to look at and be around?

Age doesn't matter much, there have been several younger members on here that has had show stock that could compete with the best of them. And many more that have set-up nice coops for egg production as well.

I am wanting good layer birds and birds that are pretty! They don't need to lay fantastically, though. Just a couple eggs would be fine.
Pretty bird btw!

The rooster who did all the damage is fairly young, and when I examined him this morning, it confirmed my belief that he has only small spurs. They are very blunt and only about 1/4 inch long. At the time, I searched to see if it were possible a predator had gotten in and had done the damage, but I found nothing to indicate that, and Vashi was quite sure the rooster was responsible for it, as he had seen the rooster vigorously chasing this particular pullet all over the complex several times. As I've said, he has in no way harmed any of the other hens; his 7 and the 2 others in the complex, and they obviously really like him. He is very solicitous of them. I suspect that he went into a "frenzy" when blood first appeared. Not having witnessed it, however, I can't be 100% certain.

Since you are just getting started I would recommend that you have an experienced poultry keeper with you when getting birds, especially from an auction or an ad on Craigslist. Unfortunatly there are those out there that try to maximize profits on not so good birds.. There is a site called Feathersite that has a good listing of breeds and here on BYC there are reviews of breeds written by members which is a good guide. Across the net there are charts for egg production and breed clubs and the list just goes on.

The people here on this thread are very helpful and knowledgable in all things poultry.

Betsy the damage that you describe sounds like the damage we had on one of our NNs years ago from a raccoon trying to pull a bird through the wire. The way your pens are set up though I think that it would have to be a very determined 'coon.

Okay, I will make sure to remember that!
Thank you for providing the site, I'm already looking through it.
The people here are very knowledgable, I'm glad that I found this thread.

Beautiful birds, I especially like your rooster, Do you sell your chickens? I think they're just lovely.
I think i'll visit some auctions maybe..
I've looked into a few breeders, but i'm not too sure about getting shipped chicks, have you ever bought any?
I like Morgans Manor, very pretty chickens.

Yes I have a website, www.chickenfanatics.com, but I don't have the Jubilees on there yet. Chicks are $30 each, eggs will be $10 each. I will post when I'm ready to sell eggs, I've had quite a few people interested.

Les, he looks happy!!! I feel, better now seeing him with his girls, thank you so much.
