***OKIES in the BYC III ***

We have a huge fire out here. We could see the flames from our back yard off in the distance when it started. But thank GOD it started the next mile north of us and the high winds were blowing NE. I'm so very thankful. To see these people out here losing their homes and their animals makes me sick.
All day we were outside fixing a 10x10 chain link kennel for the Dark Brahma cockerels I caponized (failed at it because I used the wrong tool) and the LF Faverolles capon and the 4 Barred Rock capons. I combined them all today. That will be their "bedroom" but once they're bigger they'll get to wander around a big fenced yard during the day. I hope they all stay as healthy as they have so far. I ran out of energy and didn't get the bags of mulch spread out into their pen. But it's covered and safe for them. Here's my Faverolles boy, he's so awesome. (Dusti, he doesn't seem to be Blue Salmon, but a regular Salmon).

A few I hatched last fall in another pen.

The Barred Rock capons (and a Dark Brahma in the back)

Barred Rock boys again, I reaaaallllyyy like these boys.

And the Brown Leghorn capon from Poco with 2 of the Leghorn girls doing what he does best (aside from looking pretty)

Mitzi, glad you are ok. Apparently that fire started as a controlled burn... that got uncontrolled. Wow, seeing this on the news, it is pretty terrible. Prayers for those affected.

ok, still my beating heart! Dog went to barking - muskovy girl is under the porch on a nest, so i grab the flashlight and looked and she didn't look right- so i get closer and the DANG rat snake is wrapped around her! so i crawl under there, yelling for hubby- cursing the blasted thing and got him to let her go bonking him with the head till he got annoyed snapped and me and took off, muscovy girl jumps up and runs over to the chicken run to go in- didn't know rat snakes would try to constrict a full grown duck- the other ducks move off the nest when he shows up, but not this girl! so i need ideas to catch a rat snake...

Get some of that "bird netting" and sort of bunch it up on the ground in the area he frequents. He will get tangled in the holes and not be able to back out of it because it catches on his scales. I haven't done it myself but have heard of several people doing it successfully.

Let me get this straight....you crawled under a porch and harrassed a SNAKE into letting go of one of your birds?!? And I have the nerve to call myself an animal lover :lau
That thin plastic landscape netting is awesome for snake catching. I've got some wrapped along the top boards between 2 of my pens with a dead snake from last summer still stuck in it :-D Neither me nor my husband could get him out of it, it holds them tight. I didn't want to tear down the whole netting or cut it up to get him out so we just killed him and left him. (I'm sorry, snake-lovers). There's been quite a few times I've laid my hand there to walk into the adjoining pen and almost gave myself a heart attack. I just realized I didn't wrap it around the capon babies pen today. Thank you for reminding me, I'll do that tomorrow!

in talking to someone on FB, a rat snake won't go after anything large than he can eat unless the prey goes after him, so am guessing the muscovy wouldn't give him the eggs, and being a spur or the moment kind of person, you won't kill my duck! Looking back on it, not the smartest move
