***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Yes there are threads I completely avoid for such reasons.

I try to avoid replying on other threads but sometimes I get bored and post. I got told on one that I was unlucky and needed to educate myself on genetics b/c I have a pea combed EE that lays big light brown eggs. Some seem so convinced they are guaranteed to only lay blue or green eggs.

They're in different 50'-75' yards and 10x10 pens so not any real free-ranging. I think there's close to 200 counting the bantams. I was feeding 2 5 gal buckets a day, still am actually but it's wet instead of fermented now. Unfortunately I'm one of those people who overdoes everything. If it's worth doing it's worth over-doing :-/

That's 195 roosters and 5 hens, right?

Why do you you think you are not cleaning it correctly?

Mine is pine shaving on bare ground. I stir my shavings every week or 2, put down fresh shavings occasionally. Right now my coop smells like a horse barn which oddly I like.

There really isn't much "hijacking" to this thread, we all talk about a host of stuff, mostly chicken related but not always.

Broody's will sit on a nest, pluck belly feathers, when you approach will hiss, growl, and flatten like a pancake, if you keep approaching or reach for her egg stash she will peck the gejesus out of your offending hand.
Ive had some birds bite me. And on a completely unrelated note....some cows even bite (aggressively) when 'cornered' into it. Woulda thought .... not exactly the animals you'd think prone to biting....

I should get a big dog to guard the house. we were broken into last year too and while we have a lab mix and a heeler/ Catahoula mix they were in crates. we were brooding some chicks in the bathroom (redneck, I know) I was at work and the wife and kids got home from swimming lessons. the kids biggest concern was that someone took or hurt their chicks. maybe a bigger guardian dog would protect our chickens and house from thieves. great Pyrenees maybee
the bathtub in our master sucks.... way too shallow. DH and I have taken only one bath in it each over the last number of years. BUT, it has nursed a severely injured cat, brooded over hundred chicks in it, housed the litter box, and currently has about 30 chicks of various ages stacked in it. I can close the door (our dogs are not 'allowed' in the master bedroom) but still hear what is going on. Why someone would even think to use it otherwise just doesn't make sense!

Fluffy cheeks and all! I guess it just depends on what genes they inherit from which parents..... Makes me wonder about some of my brown eggs!
