I went to Newcastle tonight and swore I was only gonna get some hatching eggs to finish filling my incubator. I got some BLRW eggs...yay! And I also came home with 7 cuckoo maran chicks lol.

Those chicks are from my neighbor's Marans. They are nice birds; big, solid bodied and realy good layers.I went to Newcastle tonight and swore I was only gonna get some hatching eggs to finish filling my incubator. I got some BLRW eggs...yay! And I also came home with 7 cuckoo maran chicks lol.
I have several pens and coops, At night all the chickens are locked up for then night. They have hanging feeders in the run (also feeders in the coop) the last few nights when i went out back, my dogs would go nuts and run to the pens, and i could here something climbing the fence, but what ever it is, it is fast, and the feeders are always swinging and by morning they are empty of food. Last night i hung the feeders really high hopiing they would be left alone. This morning when I went out to let the chickens out, two of them had been pulled down and where empty. What kind of critter goes for the chicken feed (only at night). I have large hog panels over the top of the pens, but what ever it is it can get through it. Thank god it is not trying to get my chickens, but I cannot afford to feed all the wild life.
Tonight I will take the feeders down and put inside the coop. Does anyone know what it could be that is just eating the chicken feed. And like I said what ever it is,, it can get out of the cage in seconds because I can never see it, just a swinging feeder that is empty in the morning.
Thanks
Best not to leave feed out at night. Sounds like you are feeding raccoons.
The hog panels I'm familiar with have wider gaps towards top of fence so that is easy breezy for a coon to get through. And since you are providing an easy meal via chicken feed it doesn't need to put in extra effort trying to break into the coop for a chicken dinner.
Not sure what other folks have said, but I have issues with coons and possums - mostly after the cat food that I tend to leave out at night. No doubt in my mind that they would eat the chicken food if it was out.I have several pens and coops, At night all the chickens are locked up for then night.
