***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I have been having issues with Coons eathing the chicken feed the last week, so i put the feeders inside. Well this morning i went to let everyone out and on my 3 month old pen, there was feathers every where. Opened up the coop and two dead cochin and one missing

Looking around the only way it could have gotten in is at the top of the coop is a vented area, but it is no larger then 4 inches by 6 inches. There where feathers around that area so he had to have gotten in that way, killed two and took the other one off. I am so mad at myself, should have put wire on the vented area especially since i have been seeing and having coon problems. There was a buff bantam cochin rooster and his girl in with the 3 month olds, The coon got to the rooster but is he still alive, but looks like on his left ear there is a puncture wound so he probably lost his hearing. Anyway I have him isolated right now.

So the rest of the day will be putting up hardware cloth where it should of been in the first place and making sure all doors and windows are coon proofed on all of my coops.
Really sorry for your losses. I know it's tough.

I haven't been keeping up w/ the thread and just saw the last page and a quote about this.. Amoxicillin is a moderate to broad sprectrum antibiotic that treats both gram negative and gram positive bacteria. I think the vet handbook for chickens is 125mg/kg. Kg is 2.. 2lbs. I know it is used a lot for bites. You might look it up and see if there is anything on this forum. I'm sure there is, because I think that's where I got my dosage. Either that or I got it off ask a vet.
Fishmox is the same thing or go to your regualr vet and exlpain that u don't have an avian vet and he or she should sell you some. Merricks manual might also have the dosage for chickens. Not sure. I've been going by this and it's been ok. If anyone else has any input on the dosage, by all means go ahead.

Sorry for your loss, Coons are formidable predators.

I don't know if this will help, but I stapled the chicken wire around every section, then sandwiched it with an outer layer of wood with self tightening deck screws. The screws go thru the outer layer of wood, thru the wire, and into the stud pulling it all together real tight. With a screw every 10 inches or so, the predator will have to rip the wire itself, and I am not sure of a Coon can do that or not?

I just posted that question on a new thread before finding this.

Again, so sorry for your loss, this is how I would feel in your shoes>

, hope your rooster pulls thru and you nail that Coon once and for all.

I'm so sorry. What a sad thing to wake up to. I'm glad you got it all patched up tho.

@hotcurltr , I'm going to post some pics of available boys to bring to poops. I haven't caponized any b/c of being sick, and I still have a horrible cough. I didn't want to be the "typhoid kat" that started a whole new chicken/human cross pandemic, killing 1/2 the worlds population, b/c of standing over open birds coughing obviously human germs into their open bodies creating some super bug. ........................................................................................................... Okay maybe I watch to much "Monsters Inside Me" but no one thinks THEY are going to be THE ONE. lol

Anyway I want to pick out your boy first. I am fine w/ choosing one for you, I just really need to know what is most important to you. Feather color pattern, uniqueness, really dark skin, size (either big or small), size of bow tie, etc....

I have some I think are going to be striking looking, but have larger bow ties, some have top hats, some darker skin, others not dark skinned, one has tufts and is going to be a version of very pretty bbr (I think) one that is small going to be a very pretty bbr color pea comb, hatched from a green egg and very clean necked (no feathers at all b/c of the pea comb) and many other combos.

I went and bought some duramycin (or atwoods brand Tetroxy HCA) and started my flocks on this and will continue for the next 5-7 days. I am giving it to the whole flock even tho there are just a couple sneezing and coughing. I do have a question, I have some baby chicks from 2 weeks and up. I did notice the other day that 3 of them where sneezing and coching as well so i immediately took them from the brooder and isolated them. My question is can I put baby chicks on this medication, and if so what would the dosage be. Thanks

3/4 teaspoon to a quart.
