***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I see that us Okies love our chickens I was just wondering how important it is to raise purebred chickens.

If they're pets and you don't show them it's not important in the least. My very most special birds are mixes i've hatched from favorites. I had a great big old Faverolles boy named James I got at an auction 3 yrs ago. I loved that boy so much and he was a sweet and gentle rooster. I lost him 18 mo ago but I still have 3 Faverolles/Orloff roosters out of him and a Faverolles/Marans rooster. They're all gentle and sweet just like him, and so beautiful! 3 wks ago I had GRANDchicks hatch out of James! It's so cool to have little pieces of James around me. It's my way of remembering him. The chicks I hatch all have special little stories about them like that, that's why I can't bear to part with them and why I like my mixes best.

Well I am having a hard time figuring out my goal. I started out with a pair if mille fluer d'Uccles I got at an auction. I fell in love with how beautiful they were. I then decided I only wanted d'Uccles and I ordered 10 chicks from a hatchery but they were going to take 2 months. I couldn't wait so I bought chicks from the feed store, drove to Dallas for another hen and also hatched out 6 eggs from her and my rooster. My feedstore bantams have turned out to be Cochins, OEGB's, and d'Uccles. I really like some of the Cochins, the d'Uccles, 1 OEGB pullet and my family of crossbreed beauties from Robin. I really enjoy getting eggs and would love to have a pretty variety of eggs but also hatch out some chicks to keep or sell. I'm hoping I can hatch chicks in the classroom this coming year. Decisions decisions. So my question is do I sell the super sweet OEGB pullet that walks up to me and stares at me adoringly because she is not a cochin or d'uccle? I can seperate a trio next spring for purebred eggs I think. I am making a tractor (hoping to finish today) help need advice

Can she go with the crossbreeds? If not could you get more OEGBs? I mean if you're interested in breeding her. I say if you have room for her keep her because a sweet chicken is worth more than the prettiest grump by my standards. But then again Im not trying to run a business. And if I were I would fail miserably! Plus Id have to keep track of how much i spend on these birds…..something I probably don't want to know.

So, the break happened 2 weeks ago or so. Birds getting round fine - with a pronounced limp. No skin breakage, no obvious swelling or infection. Here are photos. what do you think - try to do something this late in the game?

Right now she is in the coop with all the other juveniles but in a few months the cochin roo(s) and the d'uccle roo will want to breed. I am thinking the d'uccle would be ok with her but I really don't want anymore Roos right now. I have 3-4 I am keeping.

If your purpose is to preserve an endangered breed, it's very important. If you want to breed to sell valuable rare breeds, it's very important. If you want to raise chickens as pets, or as egg producers, it has no importance whatsoever.

I think we all go through the phase where we see something new and we want it. You'll figure it out, but you don't have to do it immediately. Think of it as taking your flock for a test drive. :D

if it is a break, can you feel movement in the bone?? if she isn't in pain, i'd almost wrap it with vetwrap to give her a little more support on it

Quote: since she has such a sweet personality, i 'd keep her, pair her with the gentlest roo, you'll know her eggs from the others, so wouldn't need to hatch necessarily-

I caponized 3 boys today, the oldest I have done, they were a little over 12 weeks. All 3 are alive, eating like piggies and giving me the evil eye. I have one known slip, but it wasn't yours Dusti. Your boy should be mostly girl, but w/ awesome feathers.
