***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Probably stems from the swedes, I think they are commonly used for crested ducks.
Here's a blue swede who only has the tiniest hint of a crest on one side. She would have crested ducklings like yours if she bred (probably).

I'm so glad they made it safe. They certainly had a long ride to go along with their 36 hour layover. I worry about the tiny ones. Coral went above and beyond (as usual!) to get them to you last night after a jam packed day of the Capon Clinic. Coral, your 3 grandkids are amazingly well-behaved! We should have another clinic and have the husbands hang out and babysit everyone's kids next time instead of fixing lawnmowers :-D
I did happen to find a beautiful English Lop rabbit on Craigslist last night. So after we got home from Rinda's we drove to Yukon and got him. His name is Dennis Hopper. I've also got 2 French Lops on hold, they won't be ready to leave their mama for 3 wks. I'm making a Bun Yard because these 3 get 11-14 lbs.
As usual I went overboard :-/ But I do love them and will enjoy making their yard safe for them. I've got so many ideas for it. The 3 dwarf breeds will probably always be indoor bunnies. Isn't Dennis adorable????

My oh my look at those ears!!!!!!! I've heard lops have a harder time in the heat b/c the ears are the main way to cool themselves.

This sound suspiciously like and arms race hubby got more then you, so you had to match / exceed him and it just snow balls from there and pretty soon you have enough bunnies to end the world 1000 x's over! lol

Rinda - You're an amazing hostess. Thank you for allowing us to meet at your house. I came home with new ducks from Dusti (loveliest muskovie hens I've ever seen), a frizzled roo from Mitzi, two cages of new capons, and a bad case of pen envy. The symptoms include drooling when looking at pictures of covered runs and hyperventilating when looking at coops larger than the ones I own.

My grandkids were physically exhausted when we got home, and everyone but Mikaela went to bed early. Mikaela rode with me to deliver Robin's seramas. She has so many new chicken friends! The stories she tells about them makes me want to follow her with a tape recorder. There's a book in there somewhere : )

Learning how to neuter roosters.

Learned something else tonight- I looked up a basic capon page online to share with some friends, and it says that capons make great broody surrogate moms because without the testosterone they revert to a female hormone state?! @Poco Pollo have you ever used a capon as a broody??
I've got capons on bug patrol, but I don't have any I've given chicks to. They become highly social and want to spend the day eating and dust bathing. They chatter much like hens. I have a few uncut roos who dance at some of the capons. They are attracted to the heavier body and smaller comb. They don't get that the lovely lady they're dancing for is a capon. I thought about using silkie capons as broodies, but I didn't have enough time to start that project.

Sad news today everyone. My girl who's been coming around every day all summer...I found her face up in the dirt this afternoon. *sad face*
Is it a bee? Sad indeed.

Where's Dr. Who when you need him?!

Seems to me that it would be hard to sex the silkies young enough to do the surgery. Would their smaller size be an advantage in this area?

Yea, on the way back home last night he informed me that it wasn't a competition lmao! He says I'm just jealous that he got 2 :-D
I've heard also that they have a tough time in the heat. The lady I got them from had the coolest set up, I'm going to take some ideas from her. She had rotating fans that were really strong also. If it gets too hot or too cold I have no problem with them coming inside. God wouldn't have invented exersize pens if he hadn't intended crazy ole' ladies to bring animals inside their houses

Except Coral seems to have perfected the art of caponizing ones old enough to be sexed. You'll never hear her say it but she's GOOD. And she's careful and precise and takes her time to do it right. The whole 'patience' thing is where I fail.
