***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Hi! Two questions...

1. Is Newcastle on for tonight?

and

2. What the heck happened to Blanchard???

Jim

Jim, Sorry, I know that it is too late.
But, there was no auction tonight. The next Newcastle auction is 2 August - so maybe the once a month auctions are on the first Saturdays of the month. Blanchard did have their auction last week (2nd Saturday). I am not sure how I feel about the new format...it is certainly expanding in its 'stuff' vs livestock format, but I don't know how they will continue with the outdoors expansion come winter time. We will just have to see!

They had a "sale room" at the end last year, plus if you are interested in a particular caged bird buy the show guide so you can look up the name of the exhibitor and ask if the bird(s) are for sale. Some are, some aren't.

Also, there was some networking last year...one of our members had the chance to admire some birds and talk to the breeder. From that contact last winter, she, and I, were able to purchase some of his chicks this spring (show quality birds) - at quite reasonable prices. He was located in TX so we were able to pick the chicks up, but he also would have shipped. While the chick prices were not auction bargain prices, we also could see the quality of the brood stock. SO.... if you are not in a hurry, this is a good place to get some good blood. Not sure how many people would want to show their show birds, but selling excess chicks, on the other hand - could be totally doable! Yes, there will be silkies there...but we are talking about THOUSANDS of birds attending. The sad fact is, the birds that I got chicks from...I never even saw - even though I am totally interested in that breed.

We showed there last year and did very well with one of our barred rock hens. Well, the children showed the birds as youth exhibitors. So there is opportunity for the youngsters as well!

We have several from the Shawnee area, and others of us participate in the really good poultry show and sale at the Expo Center the second weekend in December.  If you haven't been, be sure to go this year.  Among others, it will be the Silkie Western National this year.

I almost went last year, but wasn't prepared for the entry fee(I rarely carry cash). I did not know they sell birds there though so I will be sure to make it this year!

There is no charge for admission for the poultry show. Or to the sale room.

Hello,

I'm originally from Arkansas, but I go to college in Oklahoma. A monk on campus has chickens that I take care of and I recently got chickens at home as well. When I go back to school I would like to try and start a poultry club on campus. Is anyone here from the Shawnee area?

There are a great number of folks in the Shawnee are raising exhibition poultry.
I assume you are attending college at St. Gregory's?

Learning how to neuter roosters.

Learned something else tonight- I looked up a basic capon page online to share with some friends, and it says that capons make great broody surrogate moms because without the testosterone they revert to a female hormone state?! @Poco Pollo have you ever used a capon as a broody??

They are reported by several sites as being good w/ raising chicks, they don't set though, or "go broody" in the sense that a female does.

I'm trying to keep up with this thread!
I hope picture of my set-up photograph as well as others do on this thread! I feel like my property is in constant disarray. Yours (all of you) look fabulous! I'm still working on my circular run around my round coop...ugh.

I might would like to make a capon clinic.

You all make me feel normal as far as my chickens go. I don't know if that's good or bad, but I appreciate it. People love my chicken stories, FB posts, etc., but then throw the ever-dreaded squinchy eye, raised eyebrow, kinda like they're in pain look with "So, how many chickens do you have." question. NOT ENOUGH!

My trick (to making everything look great) is selective perspective in picture taking, and if that isn't possible, then crop out the mess! lol lol lol Wish it was so easy in real life.
