***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Oh my! Where can I find more info on this? Also do people sell eggs or birds at shows? Cause I'll start saving my pennies now!!!

Mostly they sell birds at the shows and the Shawnee show has top breeders coming in. They sell birds to help defray costs of travel etc. Great place to network and get good birds.

Wow! Well done everyone! I can't wait to go to one. How long do they usually last? I feel like the worst mom ever counting down the days till this baby eats solids  j/k but I really really want to go to a clinic!
we got started late, about 10:15, took a break for lunch about 12 and finished about 3. Coral will post when she has another class ready, maybe over fall break? Idk it depends on how her teaching job goes I guess!

They sold a lot of eggs at the last Shawnee show, but that's because the national Marans Club had their annual meeting there, so there were a lot of dark eggs floating around.

The Shawnee show is where I bought my gorgeous blue Langshans. And if you want REAL Ameraucanas, that's where to find them.

So it's more than just silkies? How much should a person expect to pay for a bird there? I'm guessing its alot....maybe I'll have a broody hen by then and can buy eggs :)

The show is for all birds, last year the Marans club met there and this year the silkies are meeting there I guess! Depending on the quality of the bird, if the person just brought extras I'd say you will pay a little more than regular price, $20-30 per head. For one on the winner's row you will pay significantly more for it depending on demand. A lot of times if you are waiting for birds from a specific breeder a show is a great chance to meet them in person and take pickup instead of having them shipped. Decide what breeds you want to inquire about and ask around on that breed's thread for some of the top names, then find out which ones will be at the show and ask them if they will bring you some birds to the show. If you don't arrange it beforehand you are at the whim of what's available and who's willing to sell their show birds that they brought.

Ok thank you. I apparently need to join the silkie thread. :)

We have several from the Shawnee area, and others of us participate in the really good poultry show and sale at the Expo Center the second weekend in December. If you haven't been, be sure to go this year. Among others, it will be the Silkie Western National this year.

I almost went last year, but wasn't prepared for the entry fee(I rarely carry cash). I did not know they sell birds there though so I will be sure to make it this year!

They had a "sale room" at the end last year, plus if you are interested in a particular caged bird buy the show guide so you can look up the name of the exhibitor and ask if the bird(s) are for sale. Some are, some aren't.

Whats the capon clinic?

Learning how to neuter roosters.

Learned something else tonight- I looked up a basic capon page online to share with some friends, and it says that capons make great broody surrogate moms because without the testosterone they revert to a female hormone state?! @Poco Pollo have you ever used a capon as a broody??
