***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Just learned something new that might be helpful to others. I've carried "foot warmers" in my "chicken kit" that I've taken to shows and sales for several years--originally got the warmers because I was getting some chicks and didn't know if they'd need supplemental heat until I got them home. Didn't need them then, but still take them. I'd looked at all the warmers (the ones that are air activated, last about 6 hours and will stay good until opened), and ended up with he foot warmers because it looked like they'd last a long time and not get too hot. Anyway, I've used them several times at shows/sales when other people have had little chicks that were very cold and needed some help.

Some of my silkies are so determined to hatch eggs that they don't seem to know what to do when chicks hatch--usually first-time moms. They often throw the hatching eggs or the newly-hatched chick out of the nest so they can concentrate on the eggs. This morning there were actually three in that situation. The first one had hatched, but was out of the nest and cold. The second had only pipped a little, and someone had pooped on its shell, so I had little hope for it--Vashi had heard them crying. Didn't find the third one until about an hour later, in another nest. It had barely pipped but was peeping. All were fairly cold.

Didn't want to start the incubator up, so I brought them in and warmed them with the hair dryer. Then opened one of the foot warmers and put it in a box with a layer of hand towel over it. Wrapped the egg (hadn't found the second one yet) in fairly wet, warm paper toweling and put it in the box on the covered warmer and covered loosely with the towel. Went out to feed the flock, and when I came back in, the baby that had hatched had died--may have been too hot--wasn't able to resuscitate it. Added the second egg under the wet paper toweling and covered it loosely. Those babies popped out of their shells pretty quickly. Had an appointment for a permanent, so checked to see they weren't too hot, and left. When I got back, they were actually on the cold side, but were pretty active, so warmed them with the blow dryer and put them out with the other tiny babes in the brooder in the barn.

Much better luck than just with the blow dryer and easier than setting up an incubator or taking a chance one of the hens would continue to brood them.

Sorry i've be away sooooooooo long but been really busy at the farm. Goat pens, chicken coops, turkey coops, rabbit hutches, fencing, etc,  and yes...my cabin has been a priority. Anyway, got my dominique chickens and they are great. Funny girls and boys and growing nicely.Built a 8x16 coop for them complete with dutch doors and casement windows. Also built a log cabin for the goats out of landscape timbers..."Camp Cabrito".  Hope to get some pics posted for the forum soon of all the goings on.

I've thought so many times of making a log cabin coop out of landscape timbers. I'd love to see pictures!

Wouldn't have thought of that... Thanks!

Nice Dominques!

I just need to pop in and complain a bit before work. I accidentally overdrafted my account and had 97 dollars worth of OD fees, plus another 32 dollar returned item fee (that one really made me mad, I didn't have enough in my account to cover the credit card payment, so you put me in the negative and then continued to pay my other small purchases??? Why would they not ALL have been returned? HMMMM?) anyways, I need to know where that returned item fee originated so I know if I need to call one of my credit card companies. So I get on and get it all figured out, then the guy on the phone is like, BTW, you can link up your savings account and it will cover each of these charges with just a 12.50 dollar fee.

Okay, thanks dude, but why did NO ONE TELL ME BEFORE I SPENT OVER $100 IN FEES? I'm SO upset with my bank. I can't get a loan from them (even with my mother cosigning, they wouldn't cover my $17,000 car loan, and were charing 3.5% interest. The used car dealership? covered everything at 1.75% interest.), I feel like they are literally trying to get fees out of me, and they aren't even in that convenient of a location. But, between my husband and I we have 6 accounts with them, and two credit cards. I feel like I'm stuck and they're jerks.

Okay, rant over. It just ruined my day a little and I needed to yell since no one is at work with me yet.

On a brighter note, Scooter and Buffy are getting very lovey. Scooter has always been more standoffish, but I pulled her out yesterday and held her in my lap on the floor, and Buffy came out to perch on my leg for awhile, then flew to the top of the cage. Scooter got brave enough to walk around in my lap, but then proceeded to poop on my leg. I mean, it was a solid normal poop (not cecal, yay!) but it hit my bare calf and slid down (SLOWLY) on to the floor. I'm not squeamish at all, but there was something about it that grossed me out. So chickies got to go back in the cage while mommy went and exfoliated her leg. lol.

Long time no talk! It's been forever since I've been on here and...I'm in a bind. My chickens slowed way down on laying bc of the heat and I'm supposed to have 6 dozen hatching eggs for the exhibit to hatch during the Washington county fair. I need them by Aug 3rd. Anyone have any extra fertile chicken eggs?

I'm in South Coffeyville so anyone around Bartlesville or Collinsville or Owasso maybe?

when do you need them and do they need to be any specific color? I get at least a half dozen mixed (it would be a dozen if they all laid on the same day, but noooo) I can give you, and I'm in Skiatook. With these temps they start growth fom day one, though, so I'm iffy on chilling them to collect more.

The temps are what I'm worried about just getting them from anyone. I would like to get them from people who know a thing or two about how to store hatching eggs. They don't need to be any specific color or breed or anything. In fact they would prefer different colors and breeds so that they will have a variety for the kids to see. Also they do have to be stored so that they can all be set on the correct day to hatch during the fair.

I supposed to have 6 dozen by Aug 3rd and my 30 some chickens only gave me 1 egg yesterday!! Maybe I should go check the forecast and pray for some cooler weather. :-/
