***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Update on the temps in the dens for the buns Okay the outside temps are 103, inside the den w/ one ice bottle is 85 by the thermometer, but it feels much cooler then that, when you open the door you get hit by the cool air, and the surfaces feel cool to the touch, and no panting rabbits at all.
That is awesome!!

That's not good news for the guineas. A friend keeps asking when we can butcher one, as we've heard that they taste like pheasant. He really wants to try it. Our only reason, for getting them, was because of an abundance of ticks, here. If they don't start ridding the area of ticks, soon, it's off to freezer camp, for these guineas. If I wanted birds to be just a noisy watchdog, I would have gotten geese. All these guineas seem to accomplish, is irritating the heck, out of me.
it took our guineas a good year to clear the land (10 acres)of ticks, we now have 8 very hardworking guineas, the first year we had 5- so once they are established they will clear them out- ng- but people either love em or hate em- there is an interesting thread on a hybrid named miracle-

I probably missed this while I was gone, but do you have them in your hugelkulture burrows or did you do something else? I'm running an a/c for mine and giving ice bottles and they are still panting. Sigh.

@Hotcurltr. Yes, ValleyVet.com has free shipping on most orders. There is a chem hazard fee for Ivomectin cattle pour-on...we buy it in the 5 liter bottles in the two pack. Meds are packed with an ice pack in a styrofoam lined box. Everything usually come UPS. You can estimate postage by using your zip code. They have horse supplies too. And they do PayPal.

Had the family out today for Indian Tacos. BIL brought me 4 gallons of okra so ill pickle some, freeze some and fry some..... Yummy. We like to get Roger's 90 year old Mom out of her house several times a week. Usually we go there and take her to lunch, but today the SIL brought her here. Had a great time. She loves to see the baby chicks and calves.

Have been having swelling in the knee so looking forward to the doctor Wednesday aspirating it. Sleeping with a heating pad on my shoulder is getting some relief...can we all say surgery?!
Hubby is getting more rest now that the doc added MagOx and Calcet as well as Folic Acid to his supplement list....sheesh! We thought he was getting all he needed from his vitamins and a healthy diet from the garden.

One hen has refused to take her chicks outside to learn to forage...she is happy sitting under the swamp cooler and guarding the chick starter bowl. Tomorrow morning, I'm going to gather up the chicks and the hen and put them in a pen under a shade tree with a little feed and lots of water. Her chicks are Buckeyes and the older juveniles love it outdoors!

Like Poco Polo's birds, some of our free rangers have discovered the covered garage/carport and the dog pen with water bucket. They love the cool concrete floor. Another bunch has decided that the concrete barn floor is best under the quad runner. The heat of the day is sweltering to us too. The dogs are choosing to only come outside to do their business during the afternoons.

Yes, the hugelkulture dens, I ended up making the out of a non working refrigerator, they are working better then I could have expected. Absolutely no panting in the dens w/ one frozen bottle per den. I put a link up to the pics not to long ago.

Been working on sending roos to freezer camp trying to get 9 done by myself today. I have 6 done taking a short break then going to try and finish up. Don't ever want to do 9 in a day again!

Hello! it has been more than 600 posts since I have been on. Don't think I will try to read back. I hope everyone and their families and birds are well.
I have been busy with the start of school and we have a new dog, a Lab. mix named Norah, that is fitting in well. She did kill a young bird that jumped out of a cage and landed right in front of her but is learning fast who is part of our pack.
