***OKIES in the BYC III ***

My beloved Junebug, the last of my India Red Jungle Fowl, started sleeping in trees the last month, and no matter how many times I move her into the coop, she's back in a tree the next night. For the last week and a half I left her alone, hating the idea something might get her, but I thought I'd move her into the new pen when it's complete. This morning I found her on the ground, not walking. Her feet don't seem to be working, but she can get around on her hocks, and otherwise she seems to be just fine.

I'm considering two different issues, either she damaged her feet coming out ofthe tree, or it's progressive paralysis. Either is possible, because the larger birds may be keeping her away from the feed, so she could be thiamine deficient. I highly doubt Mareks. Can you guys think of anything else that starts with foot problems in both feet?

I have her inside, and I've given her vitamin supplements with an extra B complex, plus a dose of Tylan, just in case.

the one on the bottom is very pretty is it a specific breed or a mut?

Last week we got an extension cord hung from the shed over to the grow coop and big coop that will house all the hens when the weather gets cold. This weekend we tackled the goat house- plan is to build a milking stand that will go inside so we have room to milk out of the weather. We will run the extension cord over to this to have light inside for this year but the eventual plan is real electric run over here. Moving the goats around today we almost had an "accident" as the billy pulled the leash out of my son's hand and made a beeline for the does! I knocked him off in time, phew! We are TRYING to keep them apart until at least December, as they are February born does.

Just got an incubator. Super excited but can't seem to find local fertilized eggs. We have a banty roo that's only about 50% effective on our big girls. Plus we only have 3 laying! I really want to hatch some eggs!

1. Do you hatch in the fall? Why, why not
2. Should I pay to have a breed shipped that I plan to use next spring or just do barnyard mix for my first go?

Where are you located? I've got barnyard mix and olive egger hatching eggs. In Norman.
I've hatched/raised chicks over the winter before. It's really a matter of whether you are set up to care for them, AND whether you want to or not. I've raised them in my garage...messy and dusty, but easy. I've housed them in my big coop but separated...simple, but walking down there through less than great weather isn't fun.

Where are you located? I've got barnyard mix and olive egger hatching eggs. In Norman.
I've hatched/raised chicks over the winter before. It's really a matter of whether you are set up to care for them, AND whether you want to or not. I've raised them in my garage...messy and dusty, but easy. I've housed them in my big coop but separated...simple, but walking down there through less than great weather isn't fun.

As for type, I would just do barnyard mixes or something available locally for your first run. Worry about special breeds in the spring. If you check on craigslist for free range eating eggs ask if they run a too with their hens, and whether or not the eggs have been refrigerated, and hatch those, or ask here we are good chicken addict enablers! I'm in the Tulsa area and can give you barnyard mix, including blue, green and olive eggs. If you're absolutely set on hatching, it depends on where you'll keep the chicks as to how much of a pain it is. They have to stay warm, so they won't be able to go outside until they're fully feathered, which will be in the dead of winter, and they won't be acclimated if they're just tossed out in a coop. They get dust everywhere, so you don't want them in your kitchen. I've housed chicks over the winter, and while it wasn't horrible, I was awfully glad to get them outside.

LoL! I did the very same thing yesterday. 5 ripe persimmons, and my RIR's gawked at them for a long time, then a pick here , and a peck there, then it was a melee !

I'm in Tuttle. It's east of Norman. We already have 5 in the garage so what's a few more, right?

We have built a brooder. It just need the legs cut down (slight height mis judgement) and to be moved into the garage. @HeyBigRhondaq How much do you charge? I come to Norman at least once a week.
