***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I may have to go check out the show too. My porcelain silkie I got from Betsy at poops has started a new love for silkies. I have since added 2 cuckoo silkies and hatched 3 silkie eggs. Since none are laying eggs and 3 are chicks I really don't have chickens yet according to chicken math right. Silkies are so awesome.

Last year there was a whole bunch of us there, and we all met at this little Mexican restaurant for lunch. It was wonderful!

It would be fun to all get together! I don't know if I'll be in attendance, but food always makes a good gathering great. Lol

On silkies--all 12 of my eggs seem to be developing. Woot!

I've been reading a fermented feed thread. Do any of you ferment? If so, what? How much per bird? I've been fermenting a wheat/rye seed mix with some scratch. They love it, but is it good for them?

i do the most basic fermenting- 5 gal bucket, fill half with crumble, a scoop of scratch, mix it with enough water for the consistency of biscuit dough- let sit a few days, stirring a couple times a day, you'll see bubbles and it will begin to smell like sour dough- my guys love it, even the guineas- there is less waste, and they get alot of beneficial bacterias - i add more crumble and scratch and water to cover as needed- they get a quart of it in the evening and have crumble on the side- if i am not careful the freerangers and guineas will hop in the bucket for a snack, even the ducks like it

I ferment a grain mixture, oat, corn, barly and wheat. My crew love the fermented grains and even the rabbits have started eating it. I ferment in a 30 gall trash barrel so I stick just to grains and not pellets to make it easier for me.

Is this their main food source then? I feel like what I'm fermenting, especially when mixed with the crumbles to soak up some of the extra juice, should be a pretty healthy meal. They don't seem to mind, for certain. Of course, my kids wouldn't mind fast food every day either. Does that make sense? I'm just wanting to make sure their (both chickens and kids, lol) eat meals they enjoy that help them do whatever it is they need to do.

Rinda, I'm bringing several nice paints (cockerels and pullets), at least one nice splash cockerel, I think one nice blue cockerel, maybe a couple of nice black pullets, a couple of whites (cockerel and pullet) from my paint breeding--I also get nice blacks from them, but mostly paints. There will likely be several others, but pretty well in those color groups. I may also bring a couple of two-year-old blue cream hens (porcelain), and maybe a couple of other two-year-old hens. I also have several very nice showgirls; blues and blacks (both cockerels and pullets). I'm pretty picky about crests, beards and foot feathering, as well as overall typiness, eye color, etc. Also, of course, toes.

So paint usually breed true but produce black and white throwbacks occasionally? I'm not very familiar with paint.

I would like at least 3 pullets and a cockerel from you, plus will probably look for some others at the show. I'd like to get my flock started with 5-6 pullets, a cockerel, and a backup boy. I'm leaning BBS- so the splash cockerel and two black pullets for sure, do you have any blue pullets available? PM me and we can iron out details and prices.

Abuelita"s is north of the Expo center on 177 Hwy. Good food at reasonable prices. We met at 11:30.

It was YUMMY!

Looks like they're whispering, sharing secretes.

I give them a bit of dry crumble the game food really high protein like 28% or so, but I just give a little of that as top dressing on the grains. So yes the grains fermented and / or sprouted is their main food source. They like it a lot, but in this case it is really good for them too. Grains are not easy for any monogastric animal to eat and digest and get the best of the nutrition from them, they have built in protection so they can pass through digestion and still have a shot at germination. Fermenting or sprouting removes these seed protectors so the animal can get the nutrition out of the grain.

That is what I wanted to hear! Thanks!
