***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Hello. i'm wondering if anyone on this thread has any Cochins or Silkies that i could purchase. Please reply, thank you.

I have some silkies in the incubator right now, due in 10 days. I'm not certain how many I'll have, but I know I don't need to keep them all.

@ashtree Hopefully they'll continue to lay over the next few days. I'll collect them and let you know how many I get.

@kelielliott I am excited to see what mixes you get! My silkies and your eggs should all hatch about the same time!

@HeyBigRhondaq I know! So exciting! I can't wait to see your colors! Did the lavender or blue make it thus far? I will also have 2 that I added in a day or two after the initial set. I also have a bunch from @bardies. Some of those might be silkie mix. We only put in about 5 from our flock. We weren't sure if they would be fertile. I think one is quitting. It's starting to have a really red ring.

Sounds great! Thank you! And if you have any porcelain, partridge, or gray silkies available I'd love to buy some! I'll also have silkie/sizzles available but mine are a few weeks behind :) I'm having such trouble establishing the colors I'm hoping to breed. I just keep hatching splash or blacks with the occasional partridge or cuckoo. My cuckoo look incredible tho. I love watching these guys feather out!

@kelielliott yea for hatching soon! How exciting! Time goes by fast, seems like it wasn't that long ago you were buying the eggs. Can't wait to see pictures of your babies :) I've been trying to upload a picture of my large A frame coop but the BYC app isn't working for me, so I'll try with the computer later.

Looked at the weather and it's about to be freezing every night. Pooey.

We are working on a second coop and finishing off the brooder tomorrow. My silkies have been in the garage. Do you think they will be hardy enough to go outside or should I just keep them in until spring? I think the youngest is about 9-10 weeks.

@ashtree I was very sad that my porcelain, buff, and partridge eggs didn't make it. What I have left is white (2), splash (2), blue, gray, and red (which I'm assuming is dark buff?). If the white make it, I will definitely sell those. I will likely keep the red and hope it's a girl. The rest I'm unsure about.

The eggs are labeled. So, how could she know the blue was blue and splash was splash? If she CAN know that, then they can't be sibling birds, right? Unless her blue is not the BBS variety? Maybe it's self-blue? I need to email her again once they hatch. She was very helpful.

Who expects to have NPIP hatching eggs available over the next few weeks? What breeds? I still have my Tolbunt Polish eggs coming after Thanksgiving, but they will need some hatch mates.

Edited-I do understand the genetics of BBS and that SplXSpl will give Splash. But there is no parentage that can guarantee only Blue, which is why I'm thinking it's self-blue/lavender. I'll now stop counting my chicks before they hatch.

I'm guessing she has a splash roo with splash hens, but I dono. I remember thinking the same thing when you first mentioned the colors. Self blue would be awesome! They're super pretty, I especially love the ones with fret marks. I have 1 lavender silkie pullet thats a big sweetie. Anyway, if you do decide to sell the grey consider it sold! Sorry you didn't get the colors you were hoping for. Sounds like you still have lots of variety tho

Anyone near the south BA area crazy like me and still hatching chicks? I had a bad shipment of eggs and only one hatched, it is peeping constantly and needs a friend a week old or less!

Haha yep I'm still hatching EVERY Sunday. Got some from last Sunday if you want to come pick one out. Coweta!

@ashtree They are laying, but I don't have an Ameraucana roo. If I could find a good blue roo, I'd be in business.

I have a young blue roo I think, about 8 weeks old if you are interested in one that young. I have two but one is to replace my mean rooster. He's a blue Ameraucana and only the second mean rooster I've ever owned.

I used a shock collar with a remote control set on a very mild level...kept myself out of sight and watched Gracie. If she chased or mis behaved, I gave her a short warning zap. If she persisted, then she got a two longer bursts and a command to sit. Only took a few times....of course when I got her she was already two years old.
Used the same system with Red...he came to us at three months of age. Gracie helped train him too.
The collars were very helpful in training the dogs to stay away from our busy highway out front.

That's exactly where I was heading- got the collar on her last week and did a LITTLE training- but now that she has puppies I took it off for now. Glad I was on the right track. She was about 8 months old when we got her.

Yes you can guarantee blue- splash crossed with black will always give 100% blue. I always tell myself, splash cannot parent a black and black cannot parent a splash. From there I can figure out BBS breedings. If she has a splash rooster and blue and splash hens, and can tell the individual's eggs apart by color or size, they COULD be half siblings. Or she has two pens, one with SplashXSplash and one with SplashX Black.

I'm still getting good hatching eggs from my Swedish Flower Hen pen and a few per week from my Croad Langshan pen. I've got Cream Legbars coming out my ears and once I do a fertility check I have lots of Sapphires (Cream Legbar X white leghorn) too. Everybody else is off lay pretty much. I'm NPIP.
