***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Okay I tried it, I think they may have been moving, but if so it was really subtle, is that normal? or should they be moving a lot?

Both reactions are normal. Most will show more activity.
I posted a link for the process about two weeks ago. It works well. I've used it several times now.

Thought this was interesting
as a way to candle eggs.
I think it would be helpful for really dark eggs like Marans.  I think I would use a little Oxine in the water just to be certain there isn't contamination.  Read an article a while back in a poultry magazine about using bleach water to dip eggs before incubating.  I prefer Oxine as a spray.

She gives good information in the video.

One of my students told me she was going to a Poultry show today. They raise silkies. Anyone know where the show is? She didn't tell me and I would love to get out of the house and see more chickens.

I saw the post on fb, how accurate is the color represented in the pic? How old is he?

Very accurate. He's about 5 months old, he was a 6-8 week old at the capon clinic at my house in... August I think? I'm down to TWO from my batch of 6, one died within a week, one got sick and died, two the dogs got. Compared to the other capon I have left his wattles are way bigger and redder and his comb is slightly bigger. I think he's a slip but don't have any experience to base that guess on. When I did the surgeries I thought I got everything on every bird, wasn't expecting any slips from that batch, but it is what it is.

Are capons more prone to early death? Just curious, lost Mr Longtail last nite, and got me to wondering if they are more susceptible to illness- he was wheezing, i had wormed him, his lungs were clear but he was terribly thin

Yea, I think he's a slip, too. I lost all 4 of the Legbar chicks I did that day, they just died one after the other the 1st few wks. I thought the 4th one was going to be ok and that respiratory crap that some of them got a few months back killed him :-( So I'll take your slip if you don't want him. I'd hate to see such a pretty boy get butchered.
I've decided I'm going to get all the girls consolidated into one yard by summer and not replace them as I lose them. I'll keep maybe a dozen hens by themselves in their own yard for eggs and aaaalllll my roosters can have the whole area in back that's all fenced and just sleep in whichever coop, pen or shed they want to. Roosters are so cool and they're the ones people don't want. I picked up a White Ameraucana and a Red Naked Neck today from a guy off Facebook, they're so gorgeous yet he couldn't keep them in town and they'd be dinner otherwise.
I've got a black Ameraucana who's a slip yet he only crows like once a month, never tries to breed the girls & doesn't fight. So slips sometimes act a lot more like capons than roosters.

Robin, it's hard to tell. Chickens seem so susceptible to sooo many different diseases and parasites that it's hard to tell what finally kills them and why.
I have a rooster here that originally came from the neighbors like 8 yrs ago. Long before I even had chickens of my own. He's still going strong and has been exposed to every disease and sickness I've managed to drag through here the past 3 1/2 yrs. I've got 4 hens and 3 roosters out of him that are 3 yrs old now and not a single one of them has ever even been sick. Yet I've had yard mates of theirs drop like flies the 1st time they get exposed to something. I think it's a combination of luck & genetics.

Awe, so sad to hear that. I've got a young Legbar boy about 10 weeks old, was noticing the other day he's way too colorful for breeding. Want me to caponize him for you? You can have him free. LOL Like you need another one. I just feel bad you lost all the ones you bought from me.

This slip is the one I posted with the super swollen face. I don't want to promise him to you until he's better! Let's see if he pulls through. Going to start treating with antibiotics in the morning.

maybe you need to market his hens eggs!!

LOL! X2!

Morning Okie Friends : ) Grand daughters are here watching Doc McStuffins birds, cats, dogs, and piggies are fed, and it looks like we'll have rain soon. The Coweta auction was a lot of fun. I got to visit with two amazing friends (Kelly & Dusti), and I came home with some unexpected treasures. Although we were attending a "poultry" auction, I managed to win a screen bamboo plant and a six-foot-tall Cyprus. I'm going to plan and make a meditation garden, so these two trees will get me started. @greenacregirl I hope you had a good time. Did you see us under the heater? Don't be shy. Come say hello so that we can put names and faces together. I also bought a vintage ammunition box in dirty but otherwise excellent condition. I've been looking for one for a long time, and antique/junk store prices were way out of line. I got mine for $3.00 last night. A pair of Ayam Cemani sold for $135.00 per bird. The roo had red wattles and two white toes, and there was something white on the hen, but I can't remember what it was. Oh yeah, and quail. I bought 37+ Pharaoh quail. They're laying already, and they're hopping hungry happy machines. I put them in a quarantine cage in the barn, but it was late so I didn't do an official count. I think there are actually forty-one of the little guys, so I'm going to have to rethink breeding pens for them. I've looked up recipes for quail eggs and quail, and I'm excited to try them. Here's my twenty-dollar cyprus tree:
Hey :) I thought that may have been y'all but I was shy, which is plain silly I won't be next time. :) I was not sitting far away I had on the brown fleece pullover and boots and jeans. The red headed little boy was mine. We missed out on those " gold plated guinea pigs. Wink! We had a great time but next time I will being chairs. I wanted to bid on those azaleas and some bamboo but I was not sure if we would have Room after my uncle ( the man in the bright blue shirt) not knowing how many critters he might acquire... Lol Once loaded we looked like the Clampets but we all made it back to Kendrick alive and well. I now have four little escapee black bunnies runnin' around in my chicken barn... All the new birds isolated in cages in my well house until I know they are healthy. (Not sure yet with what all is in there what I can recall 4 seabrights, a splash silky, the pair of blue Sumatrans, 5 RIR Roos, 5 or so black and white marans, and I know I am forgetting something... Lol and then 3 more Rabbits in my rabbit leanto area. And three roosters and a hen in makeshift condos in my husband's shop. We did not get to bed until 3 am due to getting all the new critters settled. I worked today and am headed to East Texas tomorrow to get my daughter for the holiday week. I am tired Lol but just had a blast!!!
