***OKIES in the BYC III ***

@NanaKat what size tubs do you recommend for chicken waterers in freezing weather? I have too many coops/runs to have an electric one everywhere and I need a better system. Planning on going to Walmart tonight! I just don't know if I need to get long and shallow or deeper?

You folks with your calves are inspiring. Love the babies. And @bardies that boy is beautiful!
Well, I'm not NanaKat, but thought I might weigh-in on what works for us.
We use plastic gallon size ice cream buckets. I never throw them away. This allows you to add a little water first thing in the morning. Then, a few more times throughout the day as it freezes, add more water on top of the ice. The next morning, dump the frozen ice chunk and start over. Your tub or bucket just needs to be wider at the top than at the bottom (or the same size top and bottom) so that the ice chunk will come out every morning. I also add a large-ish rock or half brick to the container to keep the birds form tipping them over.

In the late winter/ early spring, the several ice cream buckets also make great mini greenhouses for small veggie plants on those frosty nights.

This reminds me, I need to go eat some ice cream!!

My first little bunch of Jubilees go to their new home today. They are SO cute...golden little fluffy butts.

Really cute babies. Bet the one on the left is a cockerel.

I use rubber tubs from Atwoods. These are about 4 inches high and 18 inches across with rubber handles. I can top them off in the morning. About mid day I dump out the ice and start with fresh water. Easy to turn it over and step on the bottom to pop out the block of ice. If water is frozen at night I add hot water on the ice for an evening drink.. I have 7 outside pens with small coops. Pellet feeders are inside the coops, but water is next to the fence where I can pour in the hot water easily from clean milk jugs. It takes three jugs to top off all the tubs.

Rinda, I might take you up on that offer of Denegard on Friday, if you will let me know where to meet you and what time. I'll just take my lunch hour for it. Let me know a good reimbursement rate. I still have your number, so I'll text you too.

I'll let you know for sure tonight, after I get home and check him. I tried something different last night, so I'm hoping maybe it helped and didn't kill him.

Thanks for the dimensions! Thats just what I needed. And thank you @kaiwan for the ideas! I need all I can get. I really like the mini greenhouse idea.

@HeyBigRhondaq I can't wait to get some eggs! Those babies are cuties! Im hoping for a nice big rooster, and wouldn't mind a pullet or 2.

I like the way you think!
Mmmmm, ice cream.....
Along those lines, we use the livestock rubber tubs for water - same kind of idea as the icecream containers, but the rubber tubs last forever - and stand up to banging on the ground to get the ice out.

Rinda, you had me digging and googling and reading, trying to figure out how I could go so wrong on my Tylan dosages. I finally figured out where I went wrong... I forgot the decimal in my post! :D I've been giving him .5 2x/day. I do the .5 2x because I'm away from the house for 11-12 hours, so 3x/day isn't doable.

Nanakat I'm so glad you could be there for that sweet boy! I couldn't dowhat you do, because I would get way too attached to every darned moo-cow. And then I'd have a flock...

i have upped dosages of tylan, not sure if it would help, denaguard is good too, but here is the tyan info:

State vet said for tylan 50 dose is 1-3 cc per bird per day, and breaking up the dose over the course of the day is better. If you're using tylan 200 it is 4x stronger so more like .25-.75cc per day.

stay safe everyone!
