***OKIES in the BYC III ***

That is awesome Betsy.

I guess anything is possible (about the egg eating) but we go to that pen at least 3 times a day and we have never even seen a piece of shell or any evidence of a whole or broken egg. It isn't a problem is she doesn't lay (though it would be nice) but we wanted her for a companion for Rudy first and foremost, eggs (and chicks) would just be icing on the cake. (Gary is convinced she is a boy lol lol lol , he is joking we KNOW she is a girl)

3 chicks are out one is naked!
Congratulations! I don't candle my NN hatch until next week.

[ This is going to be a beautiful bird ] - - Love the top knot : )

I'm very nervous about letting a broody try and raise a naked chick.
How is your hen doing with this Neked little guy? The photos you posted showing the hen and the hatch group this Neked chick is in tells me a momma hen doesn't judge her babies by how many feathers it has. I'm going to have my students study this photograph and make a pencil drawing. I'm sure they will talk about the assignment for weeks.

I can't imagine why Bella hasn't restarted laying. Is it possible she's laying but eating the eggs before you see them? Occasionally some of mine will eat their eggs.

The crew came out and replaced our roof yesterday. Worked very hard and fast for 12 hours, with only a break for lunch and rest. Late in the day, the foreman took it upon himself to clean out our front cement paving brick walk that goes the length of our house and wraps around our front porch, as well as the rr tie/cement paving brick stairs leading up into the yard from the walk. This walk drains the rain from that area of our front yard, which is fairly steeply sloped down to the house. There was at least 5 years of leaves and debris covering that walk before he cleaned it out. I imagine he was surprised to find the paving under all that. It would have taken me at least two full days to do that work and although it was on the list, it was not quite my priority. Five years of knee surgeries and recoveries have reduced my ability to do the heavier yardwork, but the knees now work pretty well and Vashi and I are working hard to bring this jungle back into some kind of shape. I offered to pay him for this extra work, but he refused. Asked him if he lives in Tulsa and has a yard where he could plant things, and when he indicated his wife loves to grow things, dug him two small golden raintrees, a small redbud, a small red flowering Japanese Quince, a Kerria Japonica, a couple of big pots of American Legion Poppies, a couple of nice irises, a nice start of variegated Vinca, and a purple violet. He insisted on helping dig the trees and seemed happy about all of these starts. That's one advantage of an overgrown yard that was once nice--there are lots of things to share. then he used his leaf blower to clean off the front porch, moving the few things on it around so he could clean it all. Vashi also offered to pay him, which he also refused.

IT is so good to look out the front door and windows and see that walk cleaned off! There are still a lot of nice people in this world!

Does this roofing crew have a website? They deserve to have positive comments like yours posted. I can't think of a better endorsement for a such a hard working crew.

Mom is doing very well w/ the naked chick so far, we are keeping a close eye and will let her stay w/ mom if we can, it will be better for her I hate to take an extra chick away from a good mom or raise her alone.

I think that white chick w/ the top knot is going to be beautiful too, I can't wait to see what she grows into.

If your students are anything like the students we took Rudy to see they will be talking about it for a while. But I learned the hard way before showing to explain there is nothing whatsoever wrong w/ the chicken, no sickness, no injury, no plucking was done. One girl started crying when she saw Rudy thinking we had plucked him live.

Put them on Angie's List!

Oh and I'd like to see the drawings they do.

Thanks for sharing how the young lady reacted when she saw Rudy. It helps me plan what I"ll say before I show the new chick photos. At the very least, they will hear about the scaleless gene and see some of my drawings before I show the photograph. Along with the new chick photos, I plan to show some photos of hairless cats and people. If time permits, we will talk about alopecia universalis, which is an advanced form of alopecia areata.

Students made imaginative drawings that included Rudy last year. Like so much of my example folio, this example is unfinished. The unfinished drawing allows students to speculate on what will come next.

After seeing Rudy's photos, students chose elements from paintings and drawings we'd studied for the background, and then they added a twist in the middle ground. I asked students to suggest the background for my example, and they liked the mysterious landscape Leonardo da Vinci painted in The Mona Lisa. The aliens are the twist in my drawing. They fit in well with the background, and they direct the viewer back to Rudy with their enormous eyes.

Thanks @Kyzmette and @lonnyandrinda. I'm just kinda in shock. My husband and I just buried 27 but there is still 1 missing. I'm sure it's dead or close to dead. Im reminding myself of all the things I have to be thankful for. I'm just a crying fool and the kids fell asleep thinking a few might make it but after looking them over it was clear they were goners. So it's going to be hard tomorrow-which it was going to be anyway. Man we loved those guys. I wish I knew how to not get attached.
So sorry to hear this!!! Your big white dog that stayed in the silkie coop?
