***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Out of all those eggs I got ten chicks. I had about half a dozen rotten eggs, and a lot of the eggs had bacterial growth inside. Of the chicks that hatched, a couple have foot deformities. And note that most of the eggs that hatched were fully incubated in the brinsea, so no temp fluctuations. The hatches mostly look like orpingtons but who can tell, right?

None of the white egggs I got hatched, and I was really looking forward to seeing what those ended up being. What do yours look like?

This is what I got. Most of them are black.

Kass...great info on the wine making equipment. My SIL makes good wine too...but he has all those gadgets. Yours sounds wonderful.

Kyzmette, Have any of your iris begun blooming yet? My white and yellow ones are blooming now.

Has anyone heard from Shelbydog lately?

It has been raining here the past few days... 3/4 of an inch, but the ground was already pretty saturated. The chickens are calling for an ark!
Because it was so wet, I decided to go ahead an work up hominy to can. Started this morning and after going thru all the boiling and cleaning steps now the two canners are humming with shut down at 4:30pm. Since I was already in the kitchen, roasted a variety of veggies for lunch. mmmmm good.

Yesterday morning, I cleaned the brooder room top to bottom while the boys worked on the cable fence in the front lot. The two bulls in the lot had done a number on the fence. They had to put up panels until they can drill holes and set new posts. Sprayed the brooder room with Pinesol since I was noticing a few fly larva in the cage trays. New pine shavings and Pinesol sure made a nice smelling brooder room. Moved chicks to the brooder room and moved chicks around inside.

Just three more hatches before my trip in early May, so Im not setting eggs until April 22. Wont be able to candle that batch until I get home so will only set eggs that are 7 days old or younger. The next batch will be set on April 30 before I leave.
Roger will be taking care of all the birds while I'm gone ...I figured taking care of day olds would be more than he should have to do so I haven't been collecting eggs for hatching for about two weeks....sent 15 dozen eggs to the family over the past two weeks!

I will probably change roosters in the Cochin pen and trim their bums. And need to do the trimming in the White Wyandotte, Buckeye and Columbian Wyandotte pens too. Fertility has been lower because of all those gorgeous feathers.

I'm fairly certain that in this group, y'all have seen just about most every situation, associated with chicken health. So, before running over to the chicken health forums, to ask, I'll ask the folks I know and trust, first.
I have 6 Cuckoo Marans hens and one rooster. All act quite healthy, and the eggs seem to be adequately fertilized. One hen, though, I recently noticed, has a foot issue, and it's not bumblefoot. She is missing all of ner nails but one, and each toe, is short, fat and stubby. Plus, her beak, shanks and toes, are much yellower, than everybody else. This tells me that she's probably not laying. But, overall, could it be indicative of health issues?

The automatic turner on my Brinsea Mini incubator stopped turning. I'm thinking it locked up or burnt out. I am hand turning my eggs right now. Has this happened to anyone else? I have only had this incubator a year

For what they are, the Brinsea's are awfully expensive incubators. I've never had one. But my first order of business would be to contact them and demand that they make it right.

Mine is still going strong- i chose the brinsea because its a plug n play- don't have to do adjustments or anything and wanted something small- hand turning isn't a bad thing, i do that with my seramas, but it would be annoying if you were counting on it, is it under warranty?
