***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I personally would see what they do w/ chicks instead of eggs.  You should be able to tell (very supervised) if they are going to take to the chicks or not.  If not let the out to range, if so woooo hoooo you can party while the "nanny" raises the kids!!!!! lol lol lol

How do you go about giving chicks to broodies? I've got 2 and my eggs are due soon and I want to give them chicks but I've never done it before and they are young and have never been mom's before. What would be the easiest way to do it safely?

My chickens have always been sitting on imaginary (or sometimes real) eggs. I bring the chicks out and cup them in my hand shielded from the mom her instinct is to peck when broody, and put it under her like an egg. Most people say to do it at night, but I want to see how she is going to act so I do it late afternoon, but still plenty of light to see if she is aggressive AT ALL to the chicks, if so it is a no go for me. So far they have all accepted the chicks (under 3 days old anyway, I haven't tried w/ older more independent chicks)

BTW, if anyone is wondering why I am enamored with Blue Andalusians, take a look at this pullet. Best of Show, in Lawton, this year.
They are just SO UNIQUE, I can't help myself.

Frick (formerly Miss Priss, yes I have given up all hope) and Frack are enjoying the day outside today. I'm hoping I can transition them outside soon. Going to see how today goes.

Sharkman I would never had thought that hen would have passed with top honors. I always thought blue andulusians were ,we'll, blue! That one is really laced! She is beautiful I just didn t know the lacking was allowed for the breed. Learn something new everyday on BYC! Lol
