***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Several hours for sure, I would likely wait near 8 unless I got a bad feeling. It is better for them to hatch on their own, so I like to give them every chance at that before I step in. If I felt the chick was getting less active or less vocal I would step in earlier then the 8 hours.

Question. I have a first time mom in with the flock. She is a silkie sitting on 3 eggs. They are to hatch this weekend. Should I take her and the eggs out and move to another location? These will be our first eggs to hatch under a broody. I have one roo, twister from @BetsyOK, that is very interested in that hen and the eggs when she leaves for food and water. I am worried someone might hurt them. She is a small hen. She had only been laying a month or so.

Did you end up needing to help the backwards chick?

Oh and a lot of times the ones you help out don't fluff well. If they are dried but not fluffed it is important that you fluff them, the fluff isn't just for looking cute, but for temperature control too. A soft bristle tooth brush works well.

I'm glad you said that! I didn't know that but will remember for future reference myself!

I did pull off some of the shell on the one that pipped wrong. I left the membrane in tact except for main the breathing hole bigger. Do I wait for it to break through the membrane or do I slowly and gently pull the membrane off? It's not shrink wrapped from what I can tell just not making progress either.

If it isn't making progress I would tend to help, When they pip at the wrong end they don't have the room to zip as well, sometimes they can manage but more times then not, they can't.
