***OKIES in the BYC III ***

We picked our first tomatoes today.

I just planted a hill of cucumbers today. I hope it isn't too late.

Hey MaryJo, do you put up corn like your Mom?
Last year we bought corn from a family farm off 177 hwy. don't know if they will even have corn this year, but the price was great and the sweet corn was wonderful. If they have it this year, I'll post the information.

Yesterday, the temp here reached 101 and I lost a White Wyandotte hen and a Columbian hen from the breeder pens and three juveniles in the barn. Today during the heat of the day, I sprayed down the tarps and refreshed their water.
So far 18 chicks have hatched today....these are all Columbian Wyandotte. I set another 35 in the incubator. I'm trying to get my hatch up to 100 so I can select the best five pullets and best three cockerels to add to the breed pens next year.

lost my oldest hen donna sunday to the heat i think, have another in the bathroom with sour crop, this hen is heat sensitive normally but was real lethargic and noticed the crop- her poo was blackish green with no urates- ideas on treating?

had a fun visit with coral today - she brought home my bad boy Porthos- ornery dickens needs to spend some time growing up before he can have any hens -

and went home with oreo the polish capon - none of mine will accept him, so maybe he will fare better there

Sorry to hear about Donna!
For the sour crop, a tbs of olive oil, a tbs of apple cider vinegar, a pinch of baking soda, a tbs unflavored yogurt....mix together. Use a syringe to dribble in her mouth. Let her swallow about a tablespoon of the mixture on her own.
Gently massage her crop to work the mixture in to the sour mash in her crop. This should help adjust the acidity/bacteria in her crop.
Thirty minutes later try another tablespoon of the mixture.
Keep her warm and comfortable.
Once she begins passing a little urates with her poo, begin adding a hard boiled egg, applesauce, layer pellets and yogurt to her food cup. With the ACV and olive oil.

For impacted crop, I ordered a bottle of Crop Bound capsules from a poultry catalog (rather pricey) and then discovered that they were the same capsule as CVS brand stool softener that my husband needed after a recent surgery! They are a little football shaped gel capsule ...Amber and grey with a P10 on the grey side. These work really well.

ok, thanks! will make a note on treating, someone suggested baking soda in the water and nystatin- so many odd treatments out there

I still have 2 pairs of LF English mottled Orpingtons available! I have enough pullets to make them trios, too. I saw someone mention a swap in Coweta on the 19th - is it a swap or the auction?

Is anyone going to the Pryor poultry swap this weekend?

Are you gonna be there? I'm gonna be at the Pryor swap early Saturday morning.

Anything special you're looking for? I plan to bring at least some baby (and some older) chicks, ducks, geese, guineas, turkeys, and a kitten to the swap Saturday. Maybe some adults and some plants too, if I have the room. Anyone looking for anything in particular? I'll probably have it.

Does anyone know where I might be able to get some apx 12 week (or so) pullets, in the Lincoln County area? We lost our BSL last week to the neighbors dog. We have four more pullets that are only 3 weeks and weren't outside yet, but I was excited to be expecting eggs in the next couple of months, and would like to maybe get a couple more older ones. Dog is gone, fence is fixed, and other measures have been taken. We really don't want to have to go through that again, I don't think myself or my poor kiddos could take it!
