***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Took Roger to the ER last night with that stomach bug. He was dehydrated and still losing fluids. And he couldn't take any of his meds. Two IV bags with scripts for his nausea and his back pain, he was some better. He got some better sleep last night.
I knew it was coming on for me by the way my stomach was acting. Made the mistake of thinking I could go out at 2:30 pm to feed and water the pens so Roger would not have to do it this evening. I got all the water done and the feed in the inside pens, but just became too weak to finish. Roger came out to check on me...thank goodness and got me back inside, cooled down and in bed. He finished the feed and did get hot too...
The bug hit hard at 5pm....

The ER nurse said this is going around...hitting young and older folks the hardest..usually lasts 12 hours, but does go longer.

Artsyrobin I'm so sorry about your loss of Emily. We get much closed to a pet with a handicap and admire their ability to overcome.
We had to put a pet to sleep yesterday. Kara was a husky, 13 years old. My grandsons would sit and hold her whenever they were upset, or needed some comfort. You can imagine how heartbroken they were.

Are the kids doing ok? Its so hard to lose them, but for kids especially!


Emily was a special girl, all of mine are, but the older ones are slowly dying off and that is always hard.

Oh no NanaK, sorry both of you got it, hope it is a quick recovery. Take care in this heat, overheating, heat emergency and dehydration are not to be messed with, it can be deadly!

I'm sorry to hear that about Diane, her birds are so important to her, but her health needs to come first for sure.

NanaK, so sorry to read that you and Roger were both hit by the bug. Sounds like a bad one--It HAS to be to get the two of you down. I trust both of you are well on the mend. You're in my thoughts and prayers.

I was just thinking about your Emily the other day. Modern Game are such beautiful birds. She had a good life with you. I have lost quite a few of my old birds too. Cowboy, my marvelous Black Cochin roo from Grace and Peaches my LF Buff Cochin. I still have two of my first birds that I got from Jack when I started nearly 8 years ago. One of them, Rudy, a bantam Partridge Cochin, is the boss of the grow out pen. He is such a good guy.

This morning I found that a snake had gotten into one of my grow out cages and killed one chick. I should be glad that it was only one but if was one of my valuable Chocolate Orpingtons.

The pen is on a raised frame and I had chicken wire around only 3/4 of the frame. Today I triple wrapped it with 50' of wire and put hardware cloth over every hole imaginable. I hope it works! I have seen some raccoon scat around lately but I thought the snakes were happy with mice.

This is a Mauve Orpington hen. They are from crossing a Chocolate Orpington and a Blue. Chocolate is a dilute form of Black. Mauve is sex-linked; only hens. I am learning allot with these birds. And I used to think the genetics of the Andalusian blue gene was complicated!

This is a Chocolate hen. I love these Orpingtons. They are so relaxed and fluffy - my top two favorite qualities in birds.

I still have a few older ones, the brahmas from the first poops, and Galahad form coral- hard to believe they are that old!

How is it that you have a broody roadrunner?! I think that they are magnificent birds and had the priviledge once of rescuing a young one from the side of the road. I took it to Wildcare where I am told it recovered from the head injuries enough to be released.

No, I don't have a roadrunner in custody. She's a small girl with longer tail feathers very friendly bu always broody to the point I get worried about her. She won't let a rooster near her but sits in a nest box and is happy letting other hen give her more eggs to sit on. I tried to take the eggs away from her and she just picked another nest. Right now I'm trying to give her fertile turkey eggs since I have no rooster left.

The boys are 18 and 13 and there were still a lot of tears but they'll be ok. Kara had been in the family before Nathan was born.
