That netting is much smaller than what I've been using. I see you have it fastened vertically. I thought you were supposed to kind of crumple it up and lay it on the ground? I'm on my way to town so I'll pick some up larger screen. Correction. Larger than I've been using! What size is it and how big was the snake?

The netting in the photo is plastic garden fence material. The holes are 1" x 1". The netting was stapled to block access to a shelf in the barn. I had a broody who insisted on sitting on eggs up there, so I moved her to a lower shelf and put up the netting to discourage her from trying again.

The netting I usually use for snakes is black plastic and made for covering fruit trees. I wad up the netting and put it along the bottom of my pens to keep snakes out. They crawl in and get tangled.

humm... have any idea what would cause it, something neurological? his feet were perfectly straight at birth but i noticed the one foot the toes are curled up now. so he will probably never be able to walk right?

I noticed that about his toes too, that they were curled. There are a few illnesses that would show up around this age that can hinder walking, it could also be congenital, neurolgic, or inability to get the right nutrition from food. I had an issue w/ my birds that I think was congenital, it mostly effected the boys at about his age, they would go lame similar to maraks, but it was some issue w/ their leg tendons. On necropsy I found the leg tendons at the joint to be soft, dark and torn.

They come up volunteer every year. One is growing out of the space between the pillar and cement on the back porch.

Caught a snake in an empty nest box tonight. I hope it was the one that killed my Orpington chick and that there are no others. I grabbed it with some loppers but 5" from the head and didn't get ahold of it enough to cut it in two. I ran with it to the house and called DH. He came out with the overkill, a shot gun. If I was calmer I would have grabbed a shovel or the other pair of lopper and we could have saved the ammo.

Two different neighbors came out to see what the shots were for. One said she just knew we were killing a snake because she had seen 4 in her yard just this week!

Mary Jo, we had a friend tell us he uses the skins from rat snakes for projects and would take all the live snakes we could catch for him....right. If it is in the hen house...it is a dead snake!

I think the real problem left him vulnerable to the coccidia overload.  You fixed that w/ the meds now he still has the underlying problem.  At one month in I would bet it is a chronic thing.  If it was a blood loss issue it would take much less then one month for the body to fix that.

You might try adding a little crushed brewer's yeast tablet to his feed cup along with access to oyster shell. Both help with absorption of nutrients.

Where do you get brewers yeast? Do you think some apple cider vinegar would do him any good?

Brewer's yeast is in the vitamin/supplement section of any pharmacy.
Good for dogs and cats as a defense against fleas.
ACV is good for the gut...wouldn't hurt him any.
Also polyvisol baby vitamins w/o iron can give a boost.
I like giving plain yogurt to help with good bacteria in the digestive system.

Yes Ma'am! Actually I think the pattern on the main body of the snake is so beautiful but I felt nothing but horror and anger when I saw that head. Egg eating is one thing but killing a bird is a NO GO!

Ok I have they right netting then. I was just a bit confused when I saw the larger netting. I wouldn't want to miss the chance to catch a snake. I'm not very found of them
