***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Hi there! Quick question. I'm still fairly new to OK and I'm new to raising chickens. I've done a little bit of research but haven't found any straight answers. I know it's illegal to shoot a hawk. But is it still illegal if they are in the middle of attacking your chickens (i.e. Property)? My flock was recently attacked by 3 Hawks at the same time and now I have people (who don't own chicken by the way) telling me that firing my shotgun in the general direction of the Hawks is illegal. Even though my aim is bad and there's no way I could ever hit a hawk.

Okla state statutes allow you to kill a hawk or owl that is attacking your flock or livestock. It is illegal to shoot an eagle. I have given the actual statute notations before. I'll pull it up for you.

Here is the citation for you.

State statute allows you to kill a hawk if it is killing your poultry.
Citation: OK ST T.29 5-410
Summary:
"Oklahoma law prohibits the knowing and willful killing or molestation of hawks, falcons, owls, or eagles or their nests, eggs, or young. the only exceptions to this prohibition are the taking of a hawk or owl in the act of destroying domestic birds or fowl, or the use of hawks! owls, falcons, or eagles by licensed falconers."

There is more discussion on this statute at

I printed off the actual citation pages for neighbors a few years ago...stopped the Nay-Sayers.

Noticed you are in Choctaw...if you are in city limits, you may have some limits.

Thank you. We are not in city limits. I'm by no means out to kill all Hawks, but I literally ran outside, halfway through my yard and into our chicken area before I saw the hawk on the ground on my one of my brahma females. Then the hawk saw me and took off. She survived but does have a broken wing

I have deer netting over some of my runs where my pens are located. I also ran red and white heavy cord across more open pens. My chickens do free range outside of those pens and, knock on wood, I have not lost any to airborne predators. I do have hawks around, but the crows keep most of them chased away.

Made it in Thursday evening. There was an ever increasing amount of snow all the way across starting about Yukon. Was 16 in Gallup and most of what was left of three feet of snow in Flagstaff. Gas is about 2.99 in the San Diego area. I understand the Sasquatch chicken they caught in Washington D.C in in the zoo but tickets are $50 apiece!
