@Kassaundra , I'm wanting some babies! I used to have a banty roo but I got rid of him when I switched to standard size chickens.. I miss having a roo and the way they interact with their women. Your babies and the little one in the sweater are so precious!

My chicken math is going all wrong I've gone backwards

. My question is can I add 2 young ones next year without my 4 grown hens losing it and creating chaos? How's the best way?

It'd depend on how old they are when you plan on adding them, and if they've been socialized safely with one another. The Chicken Chick has some good ideas with integrating your chicks into an existing flock without causing a mess! http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/2011/06/integrating-new-flock-members-playpen.html Unfortunately, some chickens are just plain ol' meanies and you have to break their bullying habits.

Still some what new to Oklahoma. Currently living in Prague, but working in Bartlesville, so will be moving if/when they convert me from being a contractor.

I woke up really grumpy last Saturday, and somehow was talked into buying chicks. So we now have 6 Atwoods Golden Sex Links, and 6 Atwoods Barred Rocks.

She really wants a silkie, but I'm worried about getting a coop built that can handle the summers without power.

We find ventilated coops are the best way to go in the summer. The birds can hang out under the coops to stay cool, or go inside and still catch shade and a breeze. We have plywood panels that go over the screening from roughly October until April.

I am thinking of building a Wood's style coop on my utility trailer. This way I can move it to shade for the late spring and summer, and then move it to where we get the most sun in the winter. It also will allow me to move it to the new place if/when my employer converts me.

NanaKat, Glad you are ok! I am a recent member of BYC and just got through reading your BYC interview the other day .... I lurked for a year before joining so have read this entire thread (just kept it bookmarked on my computer before I joined). We have 5 production reds (a roo & 4 hens) which we keep in a tractor coop with a large run. Would like to have a mixed flock but really don't have room. I thought your interview was very nice and like your birds, pets, and hobbies. If you are still doing family history you might be interested in going to www.chroniclingamerica.loc.gov and putting in your ancestors names. It is a place to search newspapers from 1836-1922 and has no copyright (and is free). Thought this might be a good time to tell you that since you are probably going to need some recuperation time. and thank you for the sweet comments. Yes, I will definitely check out the website. I have a few brick walls that I'm trying to break thru on the genealogy journey. I'm going to be doing some armchair research for a while.


Oh and for those of you who hunt morels....after lunch today hubby took me down in the Ranger to see the new calf. We took a stroll thru a wooded area we enjoy and look what we found on that 15 minute walk!

My chicks arrived on Wednesday. I choose a heavy breed assortment and after seeing all the different little chicks I can't believe I thought about getting one or two single breeds. When I've had chickens I've always had a mixed flock so I'm sure i'll be happy. I see at least 7 different types of chicks but will be the first to acknowledge that I am terrible about determining breeds until they are grown. The little guy in the picture is the only feathered legged chick in the bunch and I honestly have no clue what she/he is. I also have one little NN and even though I try not to get attached to them I'll be disappointed if something happens to it. My biggest issue is that I had always planned on having about 12 so it should come as not surprise that chicken math struck and I have 26 chicks in the brooder. Luckily I'm not past the easily expanded point in my coop construction. I also picked up the supplies to make a smaller breeding pen so that will help with some overflow. I ordered straight run so any extra roosters will be headed to the freezer. Who knows I may end up with less than 10 in the end. Then I'll have an expanded coop to fill.

I opened my truck this morning and found a black sex-link hen asleep on the console. She woke and posed for a photo. She must have sneaked in yesterday when I got home from Easter festivities in Tulsa. When I turned the key in the ignition, the wipers came on high and the flashers were blinking for a left turn. I suspect levers were tried in an escape attempt last night. Hmmmmm........Has this ever happened to you?

No but a tom cat got in through an open window. Would much rather had to clean up after the chicken.
