***OKIES in the BYC III ***

So we candled eggs in class today (day 7). 39 out of 41 were developing. One yolker and one blood ring. Pretty good numbers!

My son works at the lower elementary after school and said several of the classroom eggs have hatched! I guess they have a pretty good sized flock there now. ROFL

What age class are you in? My aunt works with Pre-K and even when she was in Kindergarten she had a clear sand/water table. She would hatch out ducks and then let them swim in the sand/water table. Underneath it she would have pillows so the kids could watch them swim from below.

thats really cool. A great experience for them. The grandkids here are getting to put a set of chicks in the incubator, watching a broody hen (she'll spread herself out and accept all the eggs she can cover), and a broody turkey.
And a good question,LOL. What are you going to do with the flock?

My ex mother-in-law had chickens and the hens were funny. She had one hen that only hatched a few chicks and several that hatched out quite a few. As long as they had two or three chicks the hens were okay so you might see the one with only a few trying to cover 20 chicks and the others covering just three. LOL

I don't know what they will do with their chicks. I'm friends with a teacher at the upper elementary and she said I can have hers when they are ready. The thing is I don't know how to sex them and I don't want roosters.

Okay guys, Miss Phyllis went broody, but that poses some logistic problems, how does a momma chicken keep her babies warm w/o feathers. The answer of course is a special maternity dress, like that wasn't obvious

This is prototype one. It is the leg of one of Gary's thermal undies and some wool scraps.

The majority are barnyard mixes. First time with this incubator, so I didn't want anything too expensive. This is for my a high school Zoology classes. I may have to get a few of my students to take some if all continue to develop.

Great design for keeping the eggs and chicks warm and cozy! Love that last photo...what a Princess!
