***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Hello! I'm very new on here so if I am mistaken on where to post this, then I am very sorry!
So my family is going to move to a few acres soon (we live in Oklahoma) and we have no experience in owning chickens or goats (animals we are getting), so I was wondering what the best chicken would be? I know our seasons can be out of wack so I'm wondering what breed would be best for our kind of area. Same for goats! Also, what would the pricing be for the animals them self and care for a year. How many and what age should they be? Also any ideas on small goat barns or chicken coops that are inexpensive would be very helpful! Again we are extremely new at this so any tips or ideas is highly appreciated!
Thanks,
Hannah H.

it really depends on what you want to do with them, Meat, Dairy, Pets. If you want Meat goats Kikos are the best IMO Great mothers, high worm resistance. As far as price goes depends on the breeder and breed and also age and weight. With goats they are herding animals so you defiantly need at least two but more is better.

i think just about any breed of chicken dose well here sometimes when it is really hot you may have to add ice to the water and give them foot baths to cool down though.

I raise Kiko goats i use to have boers but like Kikos a lot better i have a farm page on Facebook if you want to look at my goats lookup Redbud Valley Ranch on there or if you don't do Facebook i also have a web site. redbudvalleyranch.weebly.com (hope it is ok to post this)

Welcome to the forum. I'm sure many here will chime in and help you more than me. There is a different section with coops and tractors that might help. I looked at many then built mine to suit my needs and wishes.
Most general varieties of chickens seems to be hearty like Rhode Island or New Hampshire reds and do well here. Others here might have a different view but I stayed away from specialty breeds till I got some experience. Old chickens at around 3 or so quit laying so younger is better. Prices can fluctuate but look on Craigslist, auctions etc and get an idea. Also Easter is coming so chicks will be selling soon at tractor supply and other places.
I'll let the more experienced people chime in with better answers now but again welcome to this.

So my coop should be finished mid March or earlier!!!! I'm so excited. I have 2 options of places to put it. Either the far corner of my back pasture which is too far from the house for my liking but close enough to the barn. Or in a corner by my garden. This is the ideal place for me because it is next to the garden and my back yard. I'll be putting a fence up to block my horse from rubbing all over it and chicken wire on top of that to keep my hens in. The only issue I'm having is there is a huge wisteria in one corner. At first I thought that was great! It would provide extra shade and a place to play but then I wondered if it was poisonous. I did some research and I've read it is and it isnt.. I had it blocked from my horse because he enjoyed snacking on it and I worried too much. What are your thoughts?! Has anyone had any bad experience with their chickens and wisteria? I love this bush/vine/tree and I know many many others feel the opposite but cutting down is not an option for me. Also it brings us so many bees in spring and summer to work in our garden. Will they bother the chickens??
