SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE BEEN WORKING HARD

Yes working hard to get caught up from all the stuff that has been let go during school/soccer/showing season. I am taking it easier tonight. Just slowly cleaning the house.

Hi All!

Hi Monty, actually school in Norman goes until the 27th so only 5 days left. I am really looking forward to summer even though I am going to teach summer school but it is only 3 days a week for about 4.5 hours a day. So it is doable.

As for the maggot bucket, first of all

, second of all I have also heard you have to be careful your birds do not get botulism. a year ago I heard something about this and thought about trying it until researching further and found out how common for the birds to get sick and die from this practice. Right now I am thinking about raising meal worms and earth worms. My daughter was telling me an easy way to raise both and they are great protein sources, as well as marketable.

Maribeth, at Walmart they sell digital thermostats/hydrometers for around 7 dollars. I have been using those for several years now and they are great. The AAA battery last about 1 1/2 years in them and they work great. This is just to monitor temperature/humidity plus they have a clip on the back. They can be found in the hardware department.

Well today I had another millie fleur cochin chick hatch.

YEAH!! Dang those things are cute. My millie fleur hen got scalped, not exactly sure what happened but I now have her in the chicken hospital with her head covered in sugar/antibiotic ointment and a guaze/ace bandage. Once again Maribeth thank you for the information about using sugar for wound care. Holy cow it works. My hen that had her side flayed open has skin growing on the flesh, no infection, and the hole is really small in only three week. She even started laying eggs again this week. In a week I will put her back out with the flock. Of course she gets a special hen apron, extra long on the sides.

So I should be having a bunch of ameraucana chicks hatching next weekend. I have some older pullets and cockerels (about 6 weeks old) to take to the auction in Blanchard next week. Some do not have any muffs or beards so I am not keeping them. They are pretty though but I only keep bearded ones. There is a really nice cockerel that is white with silver lacing and a big beard. I may end up keeping him because he matches a hen I got at the auction a few weeks ago.
From this batch there are a few I am going to keep. I have a beautiful solid white which appears to be a hen and one black/ with brown lacing and a white bib. It is a hen as well. She is just beautiful and has a large beard and muff. There is also a solid black with a nice big beard. Bearded ladies are my favorite.

Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend. Mine has been lazy so far, well as lazy as a chicken owners life can be.

Muesky, please share about the sugar. I must of missed it when P&B posted about it.

Joe, You have alot more birds than I do, I honestly don't know how you manage. Of course I am downsizing but still hatching. How much sense does that make?

Hey Les where did you see this add ... man thats almost in my back door

It was in the farm section of the OKC Craig's List. It has probably been flagged by now as it was in the wrong section, technically. That's why I copied it instead of posting a link to it.

Thanks again. I'll post it in the events area of Craigslist. Someone might accidently see it in there!

Went to the Wister swap today. Came back with some royal palm turkeys and a small mess of Delaware pullets. Almost came home with a Bluetick pup.
