This is my first year to grow strawberries and I have a few questions for anyone w/ experience in them.

1) Is it really bad to grow new strawberries from your runners? All the sites say it is, but is that just to get you to buy more plants? (if it really is how do stawberries survive in the wild)

2) Can you start new berries from the seeds off the berries? (is it they won't start at all or just won't come true?)

3) If I do use my runners, can they be cut off the mother plant prior to starting roots, placed in moist sand and allowed to root there, or do they need to stay attatched until they root?

Thanks

I don't know for sure ( its my first year too) but someone gave me some runners and i have planted them in some soft sandy soil and have gotten a couple strawberries off of them. not a whole lot but i don't water them as often as i should. i need to put them out with my chickens so i would remember but then I'm afraid i wouldn't have any strawberries to water at all. lol

Pairiehen well said!

Kassaundra my MIL has strawberries & that is where I get my starts from & they are always runners. The first year you may not get as many strawberries but that is the only way I know to start a strawberry plant. I am by no means an authority on them. I will ask my MIL when I talk to her.

All of our assorted "littles" have made the transition to an outside run (except for the still-fuzzy chicks I got at POOPS).

Including the three turkeys, who moved out this weekend.

Whenever we go out to feed them, the turkeys are the first to come running. Two of them were displaying for the chicken chicks yesterday, which I'm assuming means they're little toms. They are so friendly that it is going to be hard not be attached to them when Thanksgiving starts getting closer.

Just checked out the POOPs pics! I soooo wish we could have been there! Looked like so much fun, and I bet I would have learned a ton from all of you!!
Oh well, there's next year! I've already planned for it, and have a savings account set aside for it!

POOPS is always alot of fun! Look forward to seeing you there.

Like the outside coop/run. We had a burbon red that was the friendliest thing, she would talk to you & come running anytime you came outside. She also tired to load up in the back of my car to go bye bye with us! LOL.
