I had a great harvest last year from a patch that was all from runners, had to give away some berries, couldn't eat them all. I moved the patch this year though. I reconfigured my garden and turned 5/8th of the area into a chicken pen!

Kassaundra what is stated as the reason that a runner doesn't make a good plant????????

They say they carry an aphid disease and can wipe out all your stawberries. Similar to them saying not to use store eating potatoes only seed.

I have never bought a seed potatoe,, just took the store potatoe left it to grow large eyes, cut in half and plant..
As for the strawberry I can't see where a runner from a non-diseased plant would be any issue either. Even the ones at the stores are rooted cuttings or runners.

we had a nice strawberry patch till the chickens found it!

I planted all day, but didn't get it finished.

Everything I am planting is going in virgin garden spots making it very slow going.

I personally think they just want you to buy the more expensive official "seed" starting stuff (potatoes and strawberries in particular)

Supposedly stoer bought potatoes have been treatede with a chermical to keep them from sprouting in storage. I figure once they sprout, that chemical has worn off so I use them too.

Strawberries will keep producing runners in healthy soil. We started a strawberry bed 12 years ago with 12 plants and have kept beds going ever since. We always have a nice crop of berries. Every other year in late summer, we dig up the bigger plants and set in a new bed treated with compost...more to avoid the weeds and bermuda. Never had any success with starting oplants from seed.
